Can someone tell me the qualifications needed to teach in the adult education area?

for example i have a masters degree in business and IT so would i be able to teach the courses on ECDL, Advanced ICT, Business Studies etc?

And how would someone go about getting a job in such an area?

    I work in this area.

As long as your degree has the relevant areas you want to teach you should have no problem. I would approach a college offering Adult Ed. and speak to the Director of Adult Ed.

Cheers. My local secondary school offers ECDL, Advanced ICT - Business, Advanced ICT - Admin and Business Studies and I would believe myself to be well qualified to teach these. There are two separate course directors for these courses so should I email these people?

Are you talking about giving night classes? If so, you should have no bother.

However, if you are talking about delivering FETAC Level 5/PLCs in a secondary school, you will need the PDE.

Postgraduate Diploma in Education, though I think it's now the PME (masters), formerly know as the H.Dip or the PGDE.

There has been a two year part-time one in DCU, but now they are making the PME a two year full-time course, I don't know if this is in yet. Hibernia offer part-time and online courses too.

However, it's a waste of time doing the PME unless your qualifications are on the Teaching Council's list of approved courses. They decide if your qualifications are suitable for teaching.

As mentioned you need a teaching qualification to work in FE. Rules changes last year.

    See details here:

As the rules have changed, can you teach in further education if you are a qualified post-primary teacher? I'm qualifying this June as a secondary teacher so it's after the April 2013 change. I'm not registered with the Council yet.
