Female insects with "penises" have been discovered in Brazil - the first example

    The elaborate structure, dubbed a "gynosome", is used to suck out sperm and nutritious seminal fluids.

    If you're wondering why the insect with the "penis" is called the female rather than the male, it's because usually the labelling of the sex comes down to whose gametes are mobile. In general, the gametes of the male arrive in the body of the female.

    The mechanism of that arrival is somewhat irrelevant, it's motility that's important.

    That said, motility is not the only way to label organisms male or female, but it's the most common.
