What is the story with these cars as a practical proposition as a more or less daily driver, albeit doing low mileage? Any owners on here? Are big, (i.e. €1000+) repair bills common? Will a decent example still have reasonable grunt?

Well, it will beat anything French, Italian or English from the same time...

I have one as a classic car ,just make sure the timing belt was done, onl y other big job is clutch ,check that to its about 1k to replace , other than that, they are reliable ,still look great and handle brilliantly.and go like the clappers as well,

transaxle is gearbox is connected to back axle, gives 50/50 weight distribution for great handling ,

Hmmm... the Venturi MVS, Lotus Carlton and a few Maserati's and Ferrari's might beg to differ. ;)

I meant more on terms of not falling into rusty pieces and actually getting you to your destination.
How about the 928 OP? Along with the 924 and the 944 it's how Porsches should have been built from the beginning. Engine front, drive at the back, proper order, not this silly idea of having the engine hang out over the backaxle. How anyone prefers a car with a bad design that makes it dangerous and bad handling is beyond me, but people go for it because its "traditional".
It's nothing but a hangover from the 20's and 30's when people didn't know any better.
Porsche actually knew that and tried to correct that mistake with the correctly designed 928, but people hated it and demanded the 911.
    Sad but true.

Have a 944 non turbo. As a daily runner they are suprisingly good. Comfort, grunt and you can actually fit stuff in the boot!!! Not a lot of stuff but a bit! Fuel economy is for my n/a is good for a 2.5, suppose cos it's light. The biggest grin factor is other peoples reactions to seeing them. I always get waves and smiles from passers by. Being approached in petrol stations happens a bit too. Just enjoy it!

Maintenance isnt expensive, regualr servicing is not a big hassle and can be done by a competent home mechanic. The gearboxes tended to whine a little with age so dont let that put you off too much. A replacement clutch can be expensive but parts can be bought cheap enough on Ebay form the US.

As the car is galvanised rust isnt an issue except for the sills under the doors but again replacements are available cheap enough online. There seems to be a large following for the 944 so parts and tech advice is readily available.

If you have any specific queations dont be afraid to ask. :-)
