Saorview & BBC HD - picture but no sound ?

    Hi,

I have Saorview along with Sky. The BBC transmits its channels on HD on Saorview but not on Sky so I recorded on Saorview instead of Sky. When I played it back I got the program with picture but no sound. When I tried the channels today (BBC News HD and BBC 4) there was also no sound. There was sound before but its gone now.

What is the story ? Is BBC meant to be on Saorview or are they cutting the sound because Republic of Ireland should not be getting it ? Is it just a temporary measure ?

The UK channels aren't carried on Saorview, only 8 Irish channels - http://www.saorview.ie/what-is-saorview/.

Are you receiving the UK channels from a NI or Wales transmitter with your existing aerial?
What Saorview receiver are you using?

    Hi,

I am in Monaghan. Maybe I am getting them from northern Ireland but I just have a regular aerial that sticks into the back of my T.V and plugs into the apartments main aerial on top of the building I think. I don't have an actual Saorview box but the T.V has a digital equivalent built in.

I have got sound on those channels before but the last few days the sound has been cut.

    Have you tried a retune?

You mention BBC News HD & BBC4 HD? Is there still sound on BBC1 & 2 HD, UTV HD & Ch.4 HD?

retune takes 30 minutes and I loose all T.V.

I flicked through a few channels there (BBC 1 BBC 2 )and from what I can gather I get all of the non HD channels with sound but not BBC NEWS, 2, 3 or 4 HD. Its seems specific to HD.

I can't get sound from Channel 4 HD either so its a HD thing only

Maybe check to see if you have surround sound enabled (if available on your TV)? If it is, switch to ordinary 2 channel stereo.

I know you mention you also have this problem with Ch4 HD, but the Beeb are meant to have disabled surround sound on some services due to ongoing problems.

This notice is on the BBC's reception page dated 31 March:
    Updated 31/03/2014
The audio issue has been corrected for BBC THREE HD and BBC FOUR HD, which are now switching between 2.0 and 5.1 as necessary. However, the issue is still persisting with the Wales and Northern Ireland variants of BBC One. Therefore, these HD services will continue to only be available in Dolby 2.0 stereo until this is resolved.

Maybe its a UK technical problem as opposed to them making the decision to cut the sound on purpose but I am baffled as to what the problem is then.

I have the T.V connected to my HiFi for 2.1 sound. When I try pressing the sound button on the tv remote it says that the sound is fixed. Sound used to come through the T.V as well as the HiFi but it seems not be doing that at the moment. I don't know if that has anything to do with it though as other non UK HD channels put out volume.

    **Edit

I got the sound back on the UK HD channels. I was reading what you posted and tried messing around with it. Previously on the Digital the sound buttons wouldn't do anything. I got a message to say 'sound is fixed'. I switched back to Sky on the HDMI and there the TV remote controls worked. I could select Audio on the remote and select : Dual Sound A, Dual Sound B or Dual Sound Stereo. I selected Stereo and got volume through the T.V as well as the HiFi. When I went back to Digital SaorView I got sound both through the T.V and through the HiFi.

I am still a bit confused as I must have shut the sound off somehow but I don't remember doing anything. Also I don't know how things will go with future recordings as I might have to keep enabling the sound ?

Congrats on getting your sound back. I'm thinking the original advice I gave you mightn't have anything to do with your issue, especially as Ch 4HD is also affected.

I can't post links yet as I don't have 50 posts, but I put 'freeview hd no sound' into google and the 1st result was a query about no sound on HD channels with a Philips TV. Whats the make & model number of your TV?

    Hi,

Thanks for the post. I think you can type the rest of the URL without the www or http part until you get to 50 posts.

My T.V is a Sony Bravia 55-inch KDL-55HX853. I use optical out sound and put that through to my Stereo NAD HIFI. Not much going on there, it just seems something to do with the telly.

I am still not sure about future recordings or what I need to do to keep sound on by default.

There is no useful information in that Philips forum thread for the TV concerned, never mind your Sony.

I assume you are recording to a device connected to the TV via USB? The actual recording shouldn't be affected by your sound settings.

Looking at the tech specs on page 26 of the manual (pdf.crse.com/manuals/4411997121.pdf) it's got a DVB-T2 tuner, which is needed for Freeview HD reception.

The following link (pdf.crse.com/manuals/AE7H100511/ENG/c_digi_europe_co_audio.html) looks at the audio options for the TV.

I think OP would be better off clicking on 'Configuring Various Settings' & having a look at 'External Sound Output Settings'.

Or just looking for it in the TV's i-manual.

Yes it takes a USB external hard disk so I can just record. I don't think it has anything to do with the sound.

Its a Sony T.V so I'm not sure about the Philips manual. Its strange because I used to have sound and then went without it only to get it back again but I can never remember messing around with the sound option ?

The link is to a Sony manual. It's the i-manual, accessible via the remote, button with a '?' on it, labeled 'i-manual'.

Yes there is the manual built in to the T.V but when I tried to go look for sound and something like HD channels I didn't get anything.

I see page 26 is a list of specifications which doesn't say a lot.

Configuring Various Settings might be a better option as you say but I don't see that in the manual.

Just confirms your TV has a DVB-T2 tuner which is needed for Freeview HD reception. Are you getting your Freeview reception from Divis (Belfast)? The HD channels are on UHF channel 24, except BBC4 HD and BBC News HD which are on ch 33.

I can't get ch 33 here in Dundalk, but the ones on ch 24 come in fine. My own TV is a Sony 37" KDL-EX524. When I press the info (i) button on any of the HD channels it indicates the audio is 'English HE-AAC'. Is your's the same?

The fact the TV is able to detect & display the Freeview HD channels confirms that it has DVB-T2 capability.

I don't know where I am getting the channels from but my T.V is set to Ireland not the U.K and is connected to the apartment block aerial.

If I press I for Information I just get the channel info, programme info like start and end and 'English HE-AAC.

I think it is something to do with how sound is set up on the T.V but I'm not sure how it was disabled.

In Ireland, BBC4 HD & BBC News HD are only receivable from the Divis transmitter in Belfast. Not that the transmitter location has anything to do with your issue.

It suppose it's possible the 'wrong' country setting could have caused a glitch.

I did a recording last night on the TV and USB hard disk. It was 30 minutes of BBC News HD and sound was there. I guess I will have to hope things keep working.
