Registering in the North

My job has been moved across the border (just barely)
I am looking at living on either side of the border, not sure what to do. A big concern is registering the car, potential tax/insurance problems etc.
I am hoping to move back south as soon as I can.

I'm not sure about how it would work with the car though.

Could I declare it off the road down here until I'm moving back, and then just stick the Irish plates back on it whenever I wanted and get tax and insurance sorted and drive down again?

Is it difficult/expensive to register a car in NI? As far as I can tell it seems dirt cheap but I'm not really sure.

    EDIT:
    just found this
    http://www.nidirect.gov.uk/temporarily-importing-a-vehicle

which says that a foregin reg'd car can be used in the UK for 6 months in any 12 month period. This would suit me perfectly, the only problem is how would I prove the date that I started using the car in NI if I get pulled?

Proving it may not be easy but it wouldn't be easy for them to disprove it either.
You could just drive back and forth over the border once in a while and get fuel on the South side - only thing I could think of which would show a date.
I'd say they'd leave you alone though. Same as down here, there is no way of proving when it arrived. If it were the UK then you'd need the ferry ticket.

As cars are more expensive in the 26 counties, in practical terms nobody is going to take much trouble to investigate when exactly you came, if it is a short period. If you move for longer, then sell the car and buy one in NI.

In the sense that if he were moving to the UK mainland then the only way to prove the date the OP arrived into the country would be with a ferry ticket.
