Just got me first ever speeding penalty in 15 years driving.

Doing 59 kph in a 50 kph zone, I'm bitter enough over it.

80 quid and the most annoying bit 2 penalty points.

When do the 2 penalty points get wiped ? After a year or so is it

3 years from the date they get added to your license, not from the date of offence.

3 years from the date of confirmation. order of events:

    commit offence

    receive notice

    pay fine

receive confirmation in post stating exact date the points will be applied.

Yup, and in my case that took almost 3 months, even though I paid the fine the day I got it. Annoyingly slow.

You then get confirmation that they've been added, stating the date they will come off.

It is a pain in the A**.

I'm sure there will people along to tell you to slow down and so on.

I beleive there should be different speeds set at certain hours and weather conditions.

Likes of motorways 130k/ms when dry and 110k/ms when wet.

There are so many roads have 50 speed limit and don't even have any houses on them.

I had 10 points a few years back. I was fairly cautious while driving with that many.

    Any probs with insurance?

    Thanks all.

So do I have to now ring the insurance company and tell them about my 2 penalty points.

Or just leave it till next renewal.

There seems to be a formal thing of points being "applied" to my drivers licence, does this involve more paperwork ?

I told the insurance company at my next renewal. Later found that you're meant to tell them "promptly". They weren't fussed and said it only makes any difference to them if you have more than four, this is with Liberty.

I'd tell them right away just so you're on the right side of everything, dot the I's and cross the T's etc.

Thanks but don't some of them have a line something like.......... now it dosent make a difference to your premium if you have penalty points but we just have to ask anyways.

    Or am I imagining that.

I was caught in these circumstances.

The council ended up putting up new signs, because to my recollection the ones there when they replied to my mail hadn't (I'm 99% sure) been there beforehand.

That might well be true, I'm only going by what I was told by my own insurer. Depending on the timing, some of them may (quite rightly) not consider it as making you more likely to have an accident. If you get 10 points in a week on the other hand it probably means you're being reckless or just colour blind

I never declared the points so no, no probs.

They're a material fact, and that could well invalidate your insurance policy. Better to declare them than end up in court, fined a couple of grand and banned. Disagree as I might it's the lesser of two evils.

I've never heard of this happening.

    Stop scaremongering.

Nor have I, that doesn't mean it doesn't ever happen though. No harm to err on the side of caution surely?

I am fully aware how stupid and selfish it was, it was along time ago now though and i have sense now.

No. Undeclared points can not invalidate the policy just like that.
In case of payoff to third party, insurer can try to recover amount paid from the insured. But it doesn't mean policy is invalidated.
Also I can't see any possibility to be fined couple of grand and banned for not declaring the point to your insurer.

    How was that selfish?
    Don't really get it.
By not declaring them, you were taking the risk yourself. Nothing selfish about it.

It was a very selfish act.

It was a very selfish act.
    selfish
    adjective
    1.
(of a person, action, or motive) lacking consideration for other people; concerned chiefly with one's own personal profit or pleasure.

As above - by not declaring points to your insurer, you were taking risk yourself. You didn't put anyone else at risk or loss. Therefore I can't see anything selfish about it.

If he's not insured, everyone else pays if he crashes. There's a 3% levy on all policies for this reason. It creates a motor insurance fund. However, that said:
It was a very selfish act.

Not that selfish - the likelihood of it having ANY implication is very, very small as another poster mentioned.

I'd just be the sort of person that would cough up now rather than be screwed later.

No need to close your account over it :(

What are you bitter about?....to get booked for 59 your speedo was probably reading something like 64 or so, so it isn't marginal. Suck it up. Move on

What the hell do you think I'm bitter about..........80 quid and 2 penalty points is what.

He would still be insured; MIBI would not come into play here. The insuer might decline to pay out the first party portion of the claim, and they might decide to pursue to reclaim any money that they pay out for a third party claim, but legally the insurer cannot refuse to pay out the third party claim.
