Hey guys I'm a 17 (18 on may 5th) and I live in Ireland. Ireland us a very slow country when it comes to medical things. I believe whole heartedly that I have ADHD. The problem is that I have to wait 4-6 months to be seen be a psychiatrist that can diagnose me. So now I am stuck in a situation where I know I will fail my leaving cert because I can't concentrate ( an exam that determines what college you go to and what you do with your life).

Please guys please help me I really need to get this over and done with before the end of August.

    P.S I live in Dublin and I can't afford a psychiatrist. Help!!!!

Not sure what kind of options you have based on your stated limitations. However I can give you some advice based on past experiences. Though the LC is important it is not the be-all and end-all of your future. If you do indeed have ADHD or any other psychiatric or psychological disorders, it would perhaps be more beneficial to address that and then prepare for the LC with a new approach.

A diagnosis isn't always easy and can take time, depending the the psychiatrist and the symptoms displayed by the patient. In the mean time it might be an idea to inform your school about your struggles.

    Best of luck.

    ^^ This.

Your happiness and mental wellbeing is more important than anything. And the Leaving Cert really isn't as big as its made out to be. You can always repeat, or even go back after 24 as a mature student.

I would be curious to know how many people turn up to psychologists or psychiatrists simply looking for confirmation of a condition they've already decided they have? After all if they say I feel like X and behave like Y, the mental health worker can't contradict them.

Yeah, it's funny isn't it. ADHD and dyslexia are usually diagnosed when children are at primary school - ADHD being nearly unmistakable, given how disruptive the kids can be.

Funny, though, that in recent years there has been an epidemic of college age people suddenly determining they're ADHD or dyslexic, in coincidence with dispensations given by third level institutes for these conditions.

Mental health workers tend to assume their clients are crazy, and don't pay much attention to what they have to say.

I wouldn't say our little friend isn't all that well. I think he might be a psychopath. Let's hope if he gets an appointment, he puts on a real loony act, and gets locked up. ECT, lobotomy, and a chemical castration to be on the safe side.

Self diagnosis is definitely not the way to go. Also it is easy to trick yourself into thinking you have a cetain condition when you self diagnose. For example, if you read the indicators for psychopathy or bipolar, it's easy to pick a specific time in your life when you feel you had that particular indicator, which is not indicative of your overall self.

Sometimes the checklists for mental illnesses can also be very vague. Some people are simply more active or creative than others, and for them, sitting in a classroom for 7 hours straight does not hold their attention.
