    thinking about getting sky broadband

has anyone got it and what is it like?

also when I do the checker on their website and put in my old UAN number I had from eircom it doesn't recognise it

I used to have eircom until about a year ago and cancelled it.

is it true the line has to be active from eircom before you can have sky broadband?

    thanks

I have Sky Broadband, and now im happy with it.

Moved from Eircom, and the line suffered from congestion in NGB enabled exchange, so i changed to Sky. I knew that the speed propably wont get any better, but now the problem is gone after Eircom fixed its congestion issue.

Getting solid 10mb/s and im approx 2.5 km from the exchange. The customer service is also brilliant compared to Eircom/Vodafone etc.

I think for Sky you need to have an active phone line, someone else can propably comment for that.

it doesn't really matter for speed for me. with eircom I got about 1 meg and it was fine done all streaming etc but too expensive.

sky have a good deal but I don't want to reactivate eircom as will be a new contract.

has anyone had any experience of getting sky without active line?

Unfair. If you can't get fibre it is fine. I had it for a year and it was perfect bar a few weeks. Only left to get fibre.

It's rubbish don't get it unless you want 0.3 meg dl in the evenings between 7 and 11.30. When you ring to complain they'll blame their wholesale provider...... Round and round in circles you'll go with sky taking the moolah every month without fail. Great tv rubbish bb.

I would disagree, I get a very solid 9.8Mbps download and 0.79Mbps upload all times of day and night with very little issue over a wireless connection (and I game online ALOT so am VERY tetchy about speeds)

I am planning on moving from them as soon as fibre is available in my area because of what I use my internet for I really need at least a 50Mbps line but even though I'm in Dublin 7 10Mbps I the fastest I can get :(

On a side note I've always found their customer service fast, efficient and VERY helpful

Just not true in my experience. They suffered contention issues like all other providers. Most of those are sorted. As I said, it was always full speed for me.

It wasn't contention issues in my case as I was on a LLU exchange. Sky as an isp didn't have the capacity (backhaul) to handle the heavy evening Internet traffic at that time. Maybe things have improved but I will never go back to them for Internet. I never said their staff weren't helpful. They were always very professional but in the end never sorted it out.

Read the small print, free broadband is a tenner, you still have to pay the 30 euro land line every month.

    Hi

I was due to be switched over from Eircom to SKY broadband yesterday. I now have no broadband and Sky are stonewalling me. I need it for work and was told that it would be seamless. I might have nothing till next week now!

Be aware that their marketing surpasses their support.

I have been with sky for nearly a year and they are the best broadband provider I have ever had . I'm getting fibre in June hopefully . If I could stay with sky I would . But it's not an option . Last week I had a problem for 2 days rang them up and fixed within 15 minutes . They even called me back on my mobile to sort out the problem so I do think they are a good provider .

I have sky and solidly get 4 or 5 megs downloads regardless of time of day. I have had a few problems, mostly with high ping, but that has been resolved for the most part. i am in a rural area, eircom would only give me 2 meg, sky give me "up to 5 meg" and I'm happy enough with 4.

That happened to lots of people. It's like Eircom were blatantly lying to their customers about your line's true potential, but Vodafone would have had to lie too because people switching form Vodafone to Sky experienced small increases in speed.

Ever since Sky entered the market, Eircom stopped holding back on their speeds and abandoned their download caps.

4Mb or 5Mb Download Speeds I would not consider that to be good especially if you live in a house with lot of connected devices either wired or wireless

Last time I had speeds like that was in 2008

How can you consider speeds like that fantastic are your serious

I have 120Mb Wired speed with UPC and wireless speeds getting 50Mb to 70Mb
There are about 12 connected devices in use in my home at with 3 people using and streaming video no problems

I just cant even consider having broadband with speeds of 4Mb or 5Mb I would not be happy

This is just my opinion by the way

Broadband is grand... Tech support is rubbish, mind.. Stupid prick had me take the faceplate off my phone line to check for faults because my speed was low.. I was getting 17mbps (apart from once when the cheeky bastards lowered my profile) gave out enough and it was right back up.. That's the max I can get on my line so.. And no they'll activate your line and you pay them line rental which is included in the price.. But like eircom you have to get landline
