(Another!) BTEA Question

    Hi all,

I've been on the dole for quite some time. I've done college before (Level 7) and was only eligible for registration grant in my final year because my sister was starting college that year.

I then decided on a career change and did a FAS course full time from 2012 to 2013. I've been on the dole since then and am having no luck in Ireland getting a job.

However, I have secured 8 weeks of soccer coaching in America so obviously I'll be signing off for that duration. I've also decided to return to college in September (if they'll have me!) and I'm wondering where I'll stand with BTEA after signing off for the 8 weeks? Does that rule me out? The course is also a Level 7.

I'm also living at home and I've been means tested so I only get half of the €188.

    Thanks for your help.

If you have a level 7 already you wont btea to do another level 7 course.

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

    I cant think of any.

Which area do you live in? Maybe ask the adult education adviser at your local education and training board!

If you have a level 7 degree and are eligible for the grant apparently you can get a tuition fee grant, maintenance grant and registration fees from SUSI for the full duration of a level 8 degree provided you meet the income, residence and nationality criteria. I confirmed this with SUSI here: http://www.boards.ie/ttfthread/2057142046

It's a Level 7 I want to do although there is a similar Level 8 course available.

paperclip2, you answered my query a few years ago about level 7 to level 8 degree fees before but perhaps the guidelines have changed, just from what i read of your posts.

I have a level 7 degree, i'm currently in year 2 of level 8 degree receiving btea, my income is below all the limits for grants and payment of fees. Would i get my fees covered next year if i applied to susi from what you post above and the link to the other thread?

If you already received the grant for your level 7 you won't get it again. However if you didn't receive it already then because you are progressing then you would be eligible for the grant to cover your fees only and get btea weekly. That is my current situation also.

I didn't get a grant for my level 7 apart from my registration being covered in my final year. Would that mean I'd be entitled this time?

The registration being covered in final year is still considered the grant though. No harm in applying but I wouldn't say you'd get it.

What I only found out recently from SUSI is that the grant can fund you up to level 8 hons degree. If you have a full level 7 degree then under the Free Fees Initiative you cant get tuition fees for a repeat period of study i.e first 3 years of level 8

HOWEVER under the grant you may, if eligible get the fees, grant and registration for a new level 8 degree providing you complete it within 4 years, that it's a stand alone level 8, i.e not an add on degree, and as long as you meet the grant requirements re income, nationality etc. The info is in the (labyrinthine) Student Grant Scheme 2013.
