I have been looking for a new laptop for a while and I am currently considering buying a chrome book because they are so cheap. Is there a reason why they are so cheap and are they actually good?

Depends on what you want it for - if it's just for web browsing it's perfect and google docs is a good replacement for office. If you want more than that you'd want to check the compatible applications.

Its expensive to get windows using the OS it does means they avoid that cost and it basically operates in the cloud so there is little need for expensive on board storage. If you find you do almost everything via Chrome then its going to be ok but if you need to be using windows programmes then best avoid. You will also want to have a decent internet connection the whole time as it does little without being online.

I do use chrome regularly but I might use the odd application such as winamp or iTunes. And is it useless when it comes to gaming?

Forget iTunes. It will work with Google Play or Spotify if you want to go down the streaming route.

I am going to get one for basic surfing / doc editing. Pro’s are the battery life, most have no fan, so no noise, price is good, OS is updated with minimal fuss and really has no maintenance to worry about. Negatives are windows programs won’t work on the native OS, there is the option of remotely connecting to another device but for me that would defeat the purpose but it is a nice to have.

The Samsung Chromebook 2 which is coming out in May looks like the best of the bunch due to the screen resolution and will also have 4mb ram for the 13inch version. Currys have a few different ones available, but to me they screen resolution and brightness was just not enough (apart from HP 11 but the battery life and speed was not great) hence I am waiting for the new Samsung Chromebook. To sum up, if you want something that is no fuss, cheap and you live your life online you are good to go, if you are into gaming and use iTunes and other OS applications you are not really the target market, unless of course you can adapt and find alternatives on Chrome OS.
