    What could be wrong if a 1.6lt diesel Mini smokes a lot (Black Smoke) on acceleration? There is also a rattling noise in the engine. This has just developed. 140k Miles on the clock.

    very easy engine to work on but can be trouble, For what you describe i would look for a cracked pipe i.e intercooler / turbo pipes , make sure oil is not too low or too full,

    Could be EGR Valve (try cleaning it to see if it sorts it)

    or could be turbo, means replace and wastegate with pipes and seals !

    very easy engine to work on but can be trouble, For what you describe i would look for a cracked pipe i.e intercooler / turbo pipes , make sure oil is not too low or too full,

    Yea, the oil was high and there is a break in the turbo pipe. Good diagnoses!

    Should that be covered in an engine and gearbox warranty?

    I'm not sure if that's covered to be honest but I it's always worth a shot at warranty, it costs you nothing to try !
