ARist of the week - claralara

What a week, running questions, world peace issues and two marriage proposals but now time to hand over the reigns.

I've managed to get the now famous claralara to agree to come out of the boards.ie woodwork. Some say she's a distant relation of the Tarahumara Indians. Others say she's found a local supply of Pinole in raycun and theboyblunder's respective back gardens.

    I'll kick things off so....

Did you always know you'd be a better marathon runner than Chucky ár Lá?

Do you think ecoli will break 3 hours in Limerick?

What do you think is the strongest attribute in your rise to running fame?

Crikey... for the love of peer pressure, I'll just reopen my log!! ;)

Did you always know you'd be a better marathon runner than Chucky ár Lá?
Long answer short, no I didn’t “always” know that I’d be a better marathon runner than him; that said I have been mildly aware of the fact for quite some time now. In fairness to Chucky, he brought me on my first group run ever and boy did he talk the talk of a running god. I couldn't have imagined ever being able to keep up with this DCM superstar 3:30 pacer. And I probably do owe the fact of my first marathon to him given that it was that day and upon his persuasion that I switched my Connemara Half entry to the Full way back in 2011. I think he just beat my Conn time of 4:28.xx in Boston today actually.... ;)

Do you think ecoli will break 3 hours in Limerick? Only if he tapers properly as per Meno’s Novice plan.

What do you think is the strongest attribute in your rise to running fame?
In no particular order - management, coaching, and hard work.

Where did the username come from? The funpark. And the idea that I would remain anonymous and my fater wouldn’t start calling me CL!

Races on your bucket list? You say ‘races’, I hear ‘marathons’... Chicago, New York, Tokyo – to complete the majors. But I think a super performance in DCM over the next few years (based on a savage training cycle which would be as per my ability but also challenging and duly rewarded) would top any of those.

In your opinion what's your strongest PB? I think it’s safe to say the marathon. Let’s be honest, my other PB’s don’t even compare.

What courses have you applied for on your CAO? Bachelorette of genome evolution. When I grow up, I want to be a doctor!

What did meno have for breakfast in London last Sunday?

    Did it include carrots?

    Blockic or AMK?

Considering you managed to fit a weekends worth of clothes in your handbag, would you be willing to share your holiday packing secrets with other women?

Will you run a Sub 2.50??

What got you into running? A friend and I signed up to (ahem) run the Flora Women's Mini 10k Marathon in 2009. I completed that in 63 minutes and didn't run again for months. The real commitment was probably the following December when I resolved for the New Year to run a Half Marathon in 2010. I can't think of any particular reason for that decision though.

Favourite Race? I'm taking liberties on this one as not sure whether you mean favourite race or favourite distance...
    2 mile - BHAA DCC
    5k - Le Cheile
    5 mile - Raheny
    10k - KClub
10 mile - Frank Duffy (haven't run many more)
    HM - Bohermeen
    Marathon - DCM
    50k - Sir Anto Lee's Donadea 50k
    39.3 - Conn Ultra

Running highlight? Sub 3, 9th place Dublin Marathon 2013 :D forgot you weren't there to witness my delight and excitement.. ;)

(Running related) lowest moment? Going from a 19:59 5K in May 2012 (my first sub 20) to struggling to break 22 minutes in a number of races about a month later. Thankfully a blood test and some R'n'R sorted that out fairly swiftly.

Can digger really keep up in long runs or when you guys run together does that mean in same park at the same time? :D Ha. Yes. (When we're on a Digger-specific training run...)

    Chocolate or wine?
Do I rather or would I give up? If you're making me choose between my vices, I'd sooner give up wine.

Favourite session? Seeing as I've mostly been in marathon training for the past 3 years this will be boring to most... But I think it has to be the long run. I do like throwing a pressure free 5k race / parkrun in as a good session sometimes.

Most dreaded session? The final PMP session before taper - 3*3 miles w/1mile recoveries - a TRR sadistic special!!

Any more track races this year? If for no other reason than the pure entertainment factor for others, I will probably do the graded meets in Tallaght again ;)
The BHAA trinners track is always a good one too.

    Cheers yaboya :)

I guess the initial steps towards my improvement flowed from the following comments which were posted on my log by a pair of straight talking and wise know-it-alls from Tallaght on my log in April 2012...

I mean Its your call of course but I just dont see what you have to gain by running another long race so soon after an ultra. Obviously if you're happy with just running races and not too concerned with massive gains in time then this can be ignored.

TRR's closing statement was particularly scathing but triggered a stubborn "I'll show you"... And an "ok fine, please help me"

Should digger build you a sauna? Yes. But let's be fair, I will have retired from running by the time he even writes it on the to-do list. Should Digger more appropriately organise, fund and project-manage the building of a sauna for me? Yes. Alternatively he should at least organise a week of warm weather training for me over the next few months.

What did meno have for breakfast in London last Sunday? Red wine and ham.

Did it include carrots? I couldn't make any out for all the ham. But I couldn't be certain; maybe he chews well!

Blockic or AMK? Neither, I prefer a younger man :)

Considering you managed to fit a weekends worth of clothes in your handbag, would you be willing to share your holiday packing secrets with other women? Wear outfit, pack race gear, wear skanky technical Tshirt to pub while all the other women look fab - accept that with black toe nails, willingness to change clothes in car parks, dislike of heels etc etc, I am no longer a typical lady!

Will you run a Sub 2.50?? I certainly hope so.

@BB: he was probably going to ask someone else but put it off until it was too late!

    targets for 2014?
    Immediate - short term:
    - work my behind off for a 5 & 10K PB - currently 18:45 & 39:30 - I am useless at the shorter stuff... my machine just don't like it :(
    Medium to longer term:-
    - the World 50K Trophy Race is on October 31st and I'll be damned it I'm rocking up to that stage and making a fool of myself so there'll be 4 months of trying to get in super shape for that. Sepcific goals on that will be set in due course.

    favourite TBB family moment?
I love when Mrs TBB moisturises your beautiful pale vegetarian skin with St Tropez before you hit the tiles on a Saturday night.

    best coaching advice from TRR?
"Cop the flock on" - whether that's aimed at me for over-training, under-training, not stretching, panicking about silly things I have no control over and so on and so forth. He also provided some pretty decent Boston Marathon tips which led me to a surprising PB in less than ideal circumstances...apparently he's run Boston before so he know a thing or two..:pac:

    worst coaching advice from TRR?
No such thing! I hope that's the most blasphemous question that's posed this week! ;)

50K win in donadea vs Dublin 2:57: which was more satisfying?
Both ridiculously satisfying and special in completely different ways. DCM for the excitement and sense of achievement on the day. In fairness, I would have been delighted with a second under 3 hours - every thing going so well was icing on an otherwise perfect cake. Donadea for the opportunity it's given me. They were both integral to the success of the other though. If DCM hadnt gone so well, it would have been a big worry as to whether I'd comfortably go through 26.2 miles in 3:06/07 in Donadea. It was coined the Twin Peaks Plan extraordinaire!

Do you ever give digger charity wins in races, say, over the mile? :) No way! And if I ever start, give me a kick and make me put my man suit back on!! As much I would love to beat him over a mile, I think that's one of household PBs he might just hold onto.

Why do you not take water on long runs?

Has your diet changed in line with your running improvements?

Are you a 'guest star' on boards this week or is this a return to the fold :)

What do your non running friends think of your running fame?

Do you feel you get adequate support from Sportsworld to match your ambition?

    Hi there RR :)

    - What's your favourite Mcflurry flavour?
Munchies - you get a bit of everything - caramel, biscuit and chocolate. Don't think I'd go back in for that creme egg one again. Good way of getting in about a zillion calories I didn't need though :o

    - If Sportsworld were to fold. Next choice club?
Second blasphemous question of the week!! I guess it'd be a toss up between a southside club with a track (you know how much I love the track!!:rolleyes:)
Tallaght is closest to home & Crusaders is closest to work... That means nothing though given the speed at which I've been moving house and changing jobs over the last few years!

    - Do you like pacing or rather be racing all the time?
I enjoy and get sick of both in equal measures.

Pacing a HM is a great and enjoyable way to get a long run in when one otherwise might not get off one's bum. I've gotten very sick of the sound of my own voice doing it though.

And I don't race all the time but when I go through my racing phases, I am anyone's!! :D I've done a couple of races over the past few weeks and really looking forward to doing a few over the next few weeks. It's difficult to fit them in during the marathon training without jeopardising the MLR or LSR sometimes. What I like about the current phase of training is that I can knock around random 5ks, use them as sessions and recover quickly.

    Helllooooo Raymond!

How did you find boards/this forum?
Boards - one of my mates in college was a big fan of that creepy After Hours side of the house.
This forum - the gooogol machine.

Would you consider not running a marathon one year, concentrating on shorter stuff?
    100% - you've just introduced the 12 months following October 31st 2014 with that question :)

Where did I leave my car keys?
They fell out of your pocket as you were running around Lorcan O'Toole park at 6am last Thursday. Don't worry though, they're safe. I just wanted to make a couple of sets of spares and I'll drop the bunch into your letterbox over the next day or two.

Why do you not take water on long runs?
Despite what Meno says, it's not a conscious decision not to take on water or to prove and points or training methods. I drink if I'm thirsty or can feel a stitch or something coming on. Once I'm going, I don't like to stop if I don't have to. I'd never go on a long run without an emergency fiver in case I needed food or drinks. Racing can be a different story depending on the distance and effort; and I'm always be aware of weather conditions etc.

Has your diet changed in line with your running improvements?
Not in the slightest. Probably my biggest downfall. I've always liked my food and eaten good meals - lots of fruit and veg and protein and 'good' carbs and fats. Unfortunately, I have a tooth for treats and suspect I consume far too much sugar and 'bold' carbs from a snacking point of view. HAd a pretty serious operation on my jaw about 5 years ago and having been wired shut for 5 weeks (don't worry I learned how to talk through gritted teeth!;)) I swore I would never derprive myself of the little things that make life fun and enjoyable for me!

Are you a 'guest star' on boards this week or is this a return to the fold :)
I've been around...I know what you're all at; I just haven't been updating my log. I am very busy in work allof the time (thank God!), I sit at the computer all day and I hate turning on the laptop in the evenings. That plus when I'm not working these days I'm running, eating or engaging in human contact.

What do your non running friends think of your running fame?
They're coming around to me having gone from being the wild child, to some sort of freak wanting to run a HM and on to someone who's actually a wee bit good at being committed to something. I don't think anyone really got it at the beginning but there is plenty of support now. And breaking the news that I won't be going to Rio was a little difficult! Haha.

Do you feel you get adequate support from Sportsworld to match your ambition?
Yep. The club is very supportive; always recognises everyone's achievements and there is a great pool of talent on both the ladies and mens' side which is well trained. Emily knows her stuff and I've had some good chats with recently. And although my SW Athlete of the Year Award last year was mildly embarrassing, it was much appreciated. :o:)

Haha; I thought that one was well wiped from the history books! Suffice to say I had been in the Leeson Street establishment until 5am, I got a got a call at 6:30am to say be outside my apartment in 30 minutes, I was rudely awoken from my second slumber at 7am and I have little recollection of getting to the park or rolling backwards down Knockmaroon Hill... Favourite football team?
    My fantasy one :D

    McDonald's or burgerking?
    Mc Donalds

    Can you swim?
I can get myself from one end of the pool to the other with a minimal level of chlorine consumption. I would not be happy to fall overboard in open water without my arm bands.

    Favourite film?
    Notting Hill

    Favourite tv series?
    Dora the Explorer ;)

    Favourite author?
Couldn't name one. I go through phases - did the token Jodi Picoult, Harlan Coben etc. With books I'm happy to take a recommendation at its word. I NEVER read the back of a book - in fact the thoughts of doing so really annoy me for some reason!

Favourite race event? (Aside from Donadea obviously)
I guess maybe Connemara half/full/ultra.... It is a super event and a great weekend away.
    Probably definitely not Achill

Will you do the beer mile this year?
    I will not.
    This year.
But I will not rule it out forever and if my title needs reclaiming in the future, I will look after business.

Last year, what did you set out to dress up as, for the beer mile? You had a 1980s porn0 vibe going on! Was that on purpose?
Yes to the 80s bit. No to the porn0 vibe. However, I am very happy to take all positives which flow from a race... who'd have thunk I'd be so good at slutty running?!

    Favourite bar of chocolate?
    Drifter - to accompany coffee
Cadburys Dairy Milk/Wispa/Flake (or a tiffin/golden crisp variety) - to accompany wine

What's the last meal you cooked for digger?
Is that a serious question or a smarty pants dig?! ;)
    - If serious, I think it was a thai green chicken curry. When I cook for Digs, and much like one does with a fussy child, I take the opportunity to get more vegetables, complex carbs and less reconstituted fat into him. Hence why I'm not the numero uno chef chez diglara!
    - If a smarty pants dig, I respond as follows:- what was the last item of clothing Digger ironed for me! ;)

Hola Peter! Twas good to see you on Monday. I notice you don't shout at me when I'm wearing my bullet proof SW vest... you must keep that for accosting solo runners minding their own business ;);)

Have you forgiven me for asking you to join Bros Pearse ?
I have forgiven you for asking. I doubt I would ever have forgiven you had you actually managed to convince me to join the Sistas. :D Although I think you'll find that I did some recruitment for you lot; for which I know you'll be eternally grateful. You're welcome. My pleasure!

And on a serious level ( and only answer if you want ) How much did last years incident in Boston affect you.
Interesting that you ask that. 10 days ago I would have said not much at all. We were lucky in that we were well clear and safe, and I felt quite removed from the whole thing (in as much as we possibly could be removed of course). That said, I had a horrible claustrophobic feeling lining up for London last week which passed during the marathon but reappeared at the finish line. Once we finished, and given the time we crossed the line in, I couldn't get my bag and move on quickly enough. That certainly wasn't a conscious feeling so there must be something lurking the back of my mind.
In general, I am absolutely sickened and always will be that there are people who are capable of and plan to harm others like that; but that goes way beyond Boston too.

Why not? Are you going super serious for your run in the sun?
Management has banned it. It's off the cards unless I pull a Moyesey on him ;) Haha. I am super serious about my fun run in the sun. I will happily stand on the sidelines dressed as an 80s porn0 star drinking beer and taking finishing times but beering whilst running isn't on the cards for the next 6 months.

Always grateful to people who direct others to clubs other than their own for whatever reason it may be . So if you have then you do have my thanks . One final question before I stop pestering ! You are to an outsider ( someone who only knows you as a runner) extremely driven to improve yourself as a runner and get the absolute max out of yourself . Is it a family trait or something that you learnt thro trial and error

What weight are you? (if that's too personal don't answer;) )

Blank cheque. How much to give up running forever?

If you weren't as good as you are, do you think you'd enjoy running as much?

Did you ever miss work for training?

    What's the ultimate running ambition?

Do you do strength or any ancillary work to assist your running?

What's your best piece of advice to a slow runner who wants to get faster?

ps - I'm another who'd love to see you back posting more frequently on your log. Congrats on all your successes to date.

What will you do if they every stop making Kinvaras?
Buy a pair of vibrams. I'm sure they'd be just as cooperative with my attempts at faster 5ks and marathons?! ;)
Thankfully given your flamboyance with the Boston dollars that's not something I have to worry about for at least a month! Ha.

What's the furthest you have run without drinking any liquids?
Probably the run I did on New Year's Eve just gone which was the DCM route with the extra bit between the start and the finish lines... So just over 27 miles?! (If it makes you feel any better I drank 1.5l of water when I got in the door and went straight to Mc Donald's for a supersizeme Big Mac meal afterwards!!

Did you delibertaly sabotage me last august when you forced me not to drink on our 20 miler and I tore my hamstring? Absolutely not. You're well able to look after yourself. Auld man running king was able to get some H2O on board. As I said a few weeks ago, you're the only one who sabotages around here - self sabotage!

Do you think I will beat you over 5/10k this summer?
Maybe if you stop denying me as your coach... ;) That plus ditching "the plan that's worked for the last 2 years" would be a huge benefit to you for the next few months. IMHO.

Do you think digger will beat you over 5/10k?
I think he has the potential but not the discipline. If he trained properly he would leave me for dust over the shorter distances.

Considering you have a boat named after you; just how posh are you?
You'll have to make your way through the gates and past the butler to find that out.

    Any interesting facts about yourself?
I have an irrational fear and loathing of spilled and splashed milk. Makes me shudder just to even think about it. I hate opening the ring pull on a new carton and don't even get me started on when there's a ring left on the table from the bottom of someone's mug. As for that scene in friends where joey "drinks" a gallon of milk; well that just plain makes me want to die a little!!

I'm also (quite unusually for a female) pretty colourblind!

    Cameron Diaz

Ahhhh.... Drifts off into predictable daydream...... :pac:

Ever done a triathlon, and if so, where and in what sort of time?

How obnoxious will Digger be if Liverpool win the Premier League?

    Worst injury you've ever had?

Best gig you've ever been to?

Which did you prefer for route & atmosphere - Boston mara or London mara?

Is there any race you would never do again?

Longest break you have taken from running (not to do with injury)?

    Holidays - Sun or Ski?

Do you mean that side of my personality generally or specifically whether the running, and the associated drive to improve, is a family trait?

What weight are you? (if that's too personal don't answer;) )
    PM me! ;)
Suffice to say I'm about 2.5 stone lighter than I was when I returned from my J1 and about 5lbs (of fat) heavier than I was 2 months ago. In general I ban the weighing scales - i don't think it's a healthy piece of apparatus. If my jeans are feeling a little tight or my bingo wings are waving back after a piggy weekend, I'll try have a heathy vegetable laden few days of clean eating and that's good enough! Life is short!

Blank cheque. How much to give up running forever?
    A fiver?!
Haha. No. Running is absolutely not a chore for me. In fact if I had to sign a blank cheque for someone or give up running, I'd likely do the former.
If I had a blank cheque I'd be dreaming about running gear and what exotic races I could run :)

If you weren't as good as you are, do you think you'd enjoy running as much?
Yep. That's the great thing about running - it's all relative and about personal goals and achievements. I was just as happy the day I broke 2 hours for the HM for the first time as I was the day I broke 1:30. I enjoy running so much. I'm a running tree hugger :D

Did you ever miss work for training?
not once. I'm not good with the thoughts of missing work without having annual leave booked. I think that's been instilled in me since I was a child:- I once told my mum I felt unwell before school; she sent me to school. 2 hours later I vomited all over my deskmate's busy at maths 4 and ended up in hospital with suspected pneumonia!! Unluckily for me it was a Friday and I was 100% by the Monday!!

    What's the ultimate running ambition?
Given that 12-18 months ago I would have said "to run a 3 hour marathon", I'm loathe to commit to an ultimate ambition. The goalposts are ever-changing.

Do you do strength or any ancillary work to assist your running?
Not nearly enough. And the bits i do are so random. I'll do the odd 10 min YouTube upper body workout or a once off yoga class because I know I should; and then nothing for weeks. In terms of the ancillary stuff I kind of need something to be handed to me and then ordered to do it X times per week. Par example, in the lead up to the last goal race I received a daily text gently reminding to spend 5 mins stretching! Actually, if anyone cares to proffer any advice or motivation in that regard, I would like to take same on board :)

What's your best piece of advice to a slow runner who wants to get faster?
Join a club and get pulled up to the next level. If that's not your thing - do a 5k race or Raheny (;)) parkrun every couple of weeks and just run hard for as long as you can. Don't worry about times - not every race will be a PB. Do make sure the effort is put in. ( That's coming from me who did everything possible to talk my way out if the last 2k rep in training this evening... I didn't get my way but felt all the better for doing the last one :D)

ps - I'm another who'd love to see you back posting more frequently on your log. Congrats on all your successes to date.
    Noted ;) and thank you.

So I am asking if the drive is self motivated or is it something that you inherited from your parents. I know I got my desire to get the best out of myself ( sport only I might add) from being really small when I was younger ( still am) and got pushed around a bit , so I was driven to prove a point . Was there some trigger for you or did you always have it . And does it carry to general life. Sorry I am a bit of a studier of psychology and I do sense a more serious personality in the past year and wonder if that drive increased in that time
