I have a lot of ivy in a hedge thick and fine shoots smothering main hedge stem and smaller branches too. Can it be killed without serious damage to hedge. ?

Just cut it near the ground at the root.

It amazes me the amount of time it takes for it to die off. I chopped it about 2 months ago and only signs of it to wither now

Ivy is a funny one - you could cut a piece as thick as your arm but a small bit as thick as a pen might still keep it alive. I also noticed that you might cut a bit at the roots on a tree and a bit might joing the ivy higher up from another tree through a branch or something and keep it Alive

I got sick of cutting away from trees so I drilled a hole with cordless and syringed in Roundup, great job

Out with hedge brushwood and diesel for a couple years and replant. Would be quicker

Ah, I dunno. I happen to like ivy, it adds to the biodiversity of a hedgerow, providing, food and shelter to many different species. Particularly in the winter when there often ain't much shelter otherwise.

All the trees that came down here during storm were covered in ivy. Mostly ash too for some reason.

Ivy on Ash, or any tree for that matter, stop a lot of wind. More than the bare tree would, so helps bring them down. Cut a bit at a time, and pull a bit off for the sheep. they love it!

Ivy in a hedge isnt as damaging as it is on a tree. I'd leave it be.
