Where to store original copy of a will?

Like most young people I don't have a will but I'm going to sort that out this month.

I have feck all assets, nobody is getting rich here :P

I'm not looking for legal advice, just one really quick question

Where do people generally store their wills? Is it in the solicitors office? I don't know any solicitors but was planning on using a local one. I have no word of mouth recommendations, they are just local and I'll check them out.

Do they charge me a storage fee? Like a few euro a year and they collect when the 46A knocks me down?

I'm aware I can nominate an executor and they don't have to use that solicitor. I'd be pretty certain my next of kin (parents) would use their own solicitor down the country, I'm renting & working in Dublin.

Or do people generally store the will at home? I'm in a house share and I guess I could buy a little security box.

I have searched past threads on boards and been googling but didn't find an answer.

    Thanks :)

The actual will is an important document. This is the version with the signatures on it of you and your witnesses. I keep mine in a box file with other important bits such as insurance, bank, car details etc. It has alphabetic index so 'W' for will etc

As a courtesy you should inform the person(s) you nominate as your executor of your intentions and perhaps give them a copy of your will or at least tell them where to find it. This person might decline to act as an executor when needed so useful to have a second person mentioned or even a spare one as back up.

Most Solicitors will be only too happy, to store the Will for you.

Not to charge a storage Fee, but to pick up the Legal Work, when the time comes.

You do not have to nominate a Solicitor as Executor, but whoever you nominate may need some assistance in executing the will.
