Will be needing to change to an MPV soon re family size and that means getting rid of one of my cars - but which to get rid of

    1. golf 1.9tdi 185k miles bought of my dad and has never given any trouble. Oil changed every 5kmiles from new. TB just done. Probably worth very little but given its history and how it was looked after it might do another 60km miles with little trouble

    2. Avensis d4d, have it 4 years, 100k miles, had one problem after a year - lost power on motorway but got it sorted and hasn't caused any problems since. Might be worth 4000ish

Looking to get reliable mpv and probably not french as I used to have a citroen and family who have had french cars have had problems with them
so its killing me to get rid of what I think are reliable cars

I'd say the avensis as your going to have one bigger car, so having a smaller one is handy when your going to work etc
If your taking into consideration running costs which of the two you have is the cheaper and how much are you expecting the new car to cost?

    running costs are broadly similar

avensis does 51 - 52 mpg when on motorway runs and the tax and insurance is similar

golf might do slightly higher mpg (smaller car etc)

not sure what to go for - every car has its horror stories but the following seem to be most reliable probably rank as follows

touran 1.9tdi (same engine as my golf which gave no trouble), not as dear as smax or verso

smax (generally seem to be reliable but theres a few owners complain of electrics problems and later 1.8tdci engines can have problems) but its a bit dear for what it is ie 5yr old cars 15k

frv - petrol model option but boot is small

verso - too expensive in my opinion ie same price as smax for less car
