Complaint and good result

A couple of weeks ago I was cycling home from work and at one point a GoBus breezed by me on a dual carriageway (in the bus lane) with inches between us - I literally could have touched the bus with my elbow. Gave me a bit of a fright as you can imagine. Cue some choice words from me ...

Anyway - I fired off an email to them giving them the time, date, location and partial reg that I could remember to complain. The next day I got a reply from a manager saying they were waiting for the cctv footage to review the incident which is fair enough.

On Friday I got an other email from them saying they had reviewed the footage and agreed that the driver "performed a dangerous maneuver while overtaking in the bus lane by not allowing sufficient space for you or any other cyclist on the road". The driver has been spoken to in relation to it and he has apologised. They've also said that it will be investigated fully and any necessary disciplinary action taken.

I've replied saying that I don't necessarily want any action taken against the driver once he's accepted his error and hopefully he will take due care in the future. My main point was to ensure that he is more aware of the potential consequences of this act and that is enough for me - I certainly don't want someone's job put at risk for what was, hopefully, a one off lapse.

Why am I posting this? Because we're all quick to complain and vent against drivers who put us at risk on the road. But we're not always so quick to praise good action. So fair play to GoBus for taking this seriously and not even attempting to brush over it. I'm very happy with their professionalism in responding and investigating it. Certain other transport companies could learn a lot from them.

Well done on following thru with complaint. I would differ with you regarding further disciplinary action.
If transport companies begin suspending drivers for dangerous driving then I would be surprised if driver behaviour did not change as a result.
Incentives not good wishes and apologies change behaviour.

I have no issue with the incompetent and dangerous individuals losing their jobs.

I wonder could we start a boards.ie ranking of the best and worst bus services? Dublin Bus on the N11 at one end and Gobus at the other would be a good start.

I sent a complaint to Bus Eirann about a driver who was on the phone and not able to maintain a straight line. Got a mail back thanking me for reporting it and that the driver had been spoken to about his actions.

Sent strongly worded emails to Bus Eireann and Dublin Bus but received absolutely nothing back!

Went for a spin on Saturday last in Co. Narnia*, on my way home between carbury & prosperous a Bus Eireann Bus passed me tailing a group of cyclists he had slowed down and gave them plenty of space, a van peeked out from behind the bus to see if he could overtake & for a few seconds I thought he was going to, if he had, I wouldnt be here now! Thankfully a waste disposal truck was behind me, which made the van drivers mind up.
The majority of professional road users are considerate to cyclists, that being said there are some that I wouldn't allow push a buggy down the road from being on the dog & bone to reading a newspaper while in traffic.
I have to agree with ROK ON in regards to terminating employment for incompetence by professional road users.

    * the road signs in Narnia are confusing, i passed a number of signs stating the distance to the next town & the distance to it remained the same yet I had travelled anything from 5 to 15 mins between signs!!!

Least you didn't get further away from your destination, like I did several years ago driving from Nenagh to Dromineer. Typically Irish.

Its been over a week since I emailed Dublin Coach asking them to review on board CC TV footage of an overtaking manoeuvre coming out of Kildare town that I felt was far too close to me with one of their buses travelling at full tilt. I've heard nothing back but was automatically added to their mailing list so lots of special offers since
