RTE Londonderry

Does RTE (and similar media organisations) have a responsibilty to start referring to Derry/Londonderry by its official contemporary name, Londonderry?

Is RTE prolonging the process towards normality by upholding what appears to be an entrenched position of calling Londonderry, Derry? Do they have an official legitimate policy on this?

    I was born in Londonderry
I was born in Derry City too
    Oh what a special child
To see such things and still to smile
I knew that there was something wrong
But I kept my head down and carried on

    I grew up in Enniskillen
I grew up in Inis Ceithleann too
    Oh what a clever boy
To watch your hometown be destroyed
I knew that I could not stay long
So I kept my head down and carried on

Who cares where national borders lie?
Who cares whose laws you're governed by?
Who cares what name you call a town?
Who'll care when you're six feet beneath the ground?

From the corner of my eye
A hint of blue in the black sky
A ray of hope, a beam of light
An end to thirty years of night
The church bells ring, the children sing
What is this strange and beautiful thing?
    It's the sunrise
    Can you see the sunrise?
    I can see the sunrise
    It's the sunrising.

Why not settle the issue by organising a plebiscite of Foyleside residents?

I read the title and thought they were establishing a Northern wing of the RTE.

    Focus pepes...focus!

I'm talking about media organisations taking sides.
BBC NI refers to both Derry and Londonderry. With RTE its always "Derry".
Time for a little movement in the interest of all?

Only the City Council forum. Not the actual city.

Well UTV is setting up camp in the 26 counties as we speak. RTE doing fec all to invade the north.

To be fair there's probably a few old school Fine Gaelers who might be.

Because there'd be a resounding yes vote to drop the 'London' part and Unionists and their pathetic hangers-on in the south would kick and squeal like a spoilt child denied a toy.

Yeah, but wouldn't it be nice to show NI Unionists that the days of using polarised, political geographical names are over?

In my view Norn Iron unionists need to open their eyes and see that Derry is nothing like London, I like London but it is very different to auld Derry so why even use the name in front of it

Never heard BBC refer to it as Derry.

Irish government refers to it as Derry, by extension most people in the Republic including our media do too. Nobody has a 'responsibility' to refer to it as Londonderry.

It's own city council refers to it as Derry.

I was born and lived most of my life in Derry, and I don't care about this nonsense any more.

Call it what you want, and get on with something more important in life.

I work there and call it Derry and nobody's objected yet. If someone calls it Londonderry, I don't get offended either. Same goes for news organisations -- they can all call it what they like and anybody who gets offended can go back to 1970.

I appreciate your personal perspective and opinion, but do you have an input on the medias (RTE's) use of the name Derry, as is the intention of the thread?

According to wikipedia, Londonderry is the official name for the city.

The vast majority of people in the Republic call it Derry. RTE reflecting this isn't necessarily a political statement

The thread is asking for opinions about RTE's 100% use of the name "Derry", not those age old and moronic arguments about the political motivation behind the use of any name. Close the thread...

They do it to annoy you, and you alone. There was a meeting, someone suggested a way to wind up Kettleson - "Let's call it Derry" and it was adopted as official policy. Honest. RTE are gas like that.

Yes but 100% useage is a statement.

The funny thing though is that I would have never known that, through all the years of geography/history in school it was always "Derry" or "Doire".

I honestly think our education is biased towards nationalism in some ways.
