Chain rub on front derailleur

    Hi,

Went out for a Long spin today and I noticed I was getting an annoying rubbing sound from the chain. I noticed it was occurring when I was on the largest front ring and any of the smallest 3 rings on the rear cassette.

Do you reckon this is something best left to a bike mechanic or are there some basic tuning steps I could take?

    Cheers
    Jon

Sounds like a small bit of cable stretch on the front DR. There should be a barrel adjuster on the frame to tighten this if you follow the cable. Usually a quarter turn at a time, as it is quite sensitive. I find this adjustment is best done on a turbo. It could also be the front derailleur upper limiter screw but this is less likely if it has just started to happen, so I'd try the cable tension first.

Properly setting up a front deralleur is easy enough, and there's plenty of videos out there if you google, but I found it pretty frustrating the first few times. Well worth learning how to do though.

You need to adjust the limit screws. YouTube front derailleur adjustment, it's handy enough.

Sure I'll give it a go. If I mess it up there is a bike mechanic down the road but I'd rather learn these little tuning tasks myself so not having to resort to that all the time.

I have a related problem, in that I can't get down onto the smallest granny ring on the front. I put the bike up on the stand yesterday and had a look. It doesn't seem to be a problem with the limiting screw - I was actually able to take the low limit screw completely out, and it still wasn't changing. To my uneducated eye, the limiting factor seems to be the frame, so I'm not sure how it every worked at all - though it did work fine. I don't use the granny ring that often, but now that the weather has improved, I'm trying a few more adventurous routes.

    Any other ideas?

What happenss if you take the cable off. The derailleur should spring back to its "home" position over the small ring.
