Recently bought a car and got the log book last week in the post from the tax office.

Am I now to wait for another letter with my "renewal pin" so I can tax it online

    OR

Do I have to initiate this process myself

I think if your taxing the car for the first time you must do it in person.

Go to the online tax page and hit "pin retrieval" Should do the trick

I didn't have to when I got my motor February last year. Checked motortax.ie every day and eventually it recognised me as the owner. Retrieved my PIN and paid online.

I thought the last six digits of the VIN number served as the PIN for the first taxing, or is that just for new cars?

I think that only applies to new cars and newly registered imports.

    Request your PIN.

Motortax.ie, go to PIN Retrieval and get your PIN by email. You can then pay your tax online. Tax disc should be in your letterbox within 2-3 working days.

So to answer my question, sounds like the tax office do not automatically send me out the renewal pin. I have to kick the process off.

I taxed my dad's new car the other day for the first time online. Reg and last 6 digits of the chassis number as the pin.
