    Hi all.
Looking to move up from my 2002 Passat TDI.
Have been looking at Citroen c5hdi's in or around 07 model.

I do a 100 mile round trip to work everyday and need something confertable

    I know citroens are pretty good..missus drives a c4 petrol we've had since 2009 hasn't missed a beat.

I'm good with cars but have no experience of citroen HDI engines....anything to look out for?

Might be going to look at one this week.
    07, 135k miles...timing belt done at 100...under 4 grand

    I'd keep the passat.
That 1.6hdi could turn out to be reliable and serve you or it will more likely break your heart. There hit and miss at best. There's a reason why it's being sold for 4k euro.

I love citroen petrols, hate the diesels. The 2.0hdi s were ok, the 1.6, that's a chocolate engine.

The second generation C5 from 2008 is a vastly superior car but you will not buy a good one for €4k.

the 1.6 HDi engine is not a good option from my experience. It's the same unit fitted into some Focus' and Pugeot 406's. Reliability is poor, repair can be expensive. Do a google search on 'PSA 1.6 diesel issues' and see what comes up.

My experience is if you bought the car new and regularly serviced it she should be ok but if you scrimp on maintenance or delay/miss a service it's potential for reliability issues dramatically increases.

Stick with the Passat, it's an all round better car.

    Thanks for the input folks...
Also looking at focus estates...disappointed to hear they share the same engine as as the c5.

Also looking at seat alteas as well...a few options out there.

Would love to upgrade to a 07 Passat...but budget won't stretch to that.
    Have between 4-5k to spend.

Also looking at small vans / car vans...

1.9 litre motor tax is €673, 2.0 litre is €710. Not a huge difference over 12 months and gives you more options.

If it is running well then it makes sense to keep it and just spend the money on a timing belt change. You known it's history whereas you could potentially be buying someone else's trouble. Cheap diesels tend to be cheap for a reason.

As said if it's running well why not keep it for another year stick the timming belt on it probably would cost around 350 euro. But during the year put a bit of money aside each month or whatever and then you'll be able to buy a 07 passat you actually want you may even be able to get a 08 with cheap tax. Not much point compromising from the car you want just for the sake of changing your car. And most likely the 1.6 Psa/ hdi/ tdci (whatever you want to call it) engine will break your heart. I had one and never again i bought a diesel golf and I am delighted with it. It was all I ever wanted but I fell into the a focus 1.6 tdci is far cheaper but for a reason.
