    Hey all.

I'm looking to upgrade my CPU, thing is. I have no idea what I should be looking for in regards to compatibility. Tried figuring it out for myself but heavy stuff. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Looking to upgrade my computer to play games better. I believe my CPU is bottle necking. Mostly just play Total War Games. Rome 2 these days.

My Motherboard is "P5N-E SLI" and my current Processor is "Intel(R)CORE(TM)2 Quad CPU @2.40GHZ 2.40Ghz"

    http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P5NE_SLI/specifications/

Looking at this CPU, seems reasonable for my budget of 150 odd euro.

Would this CPU work with my motherboard?

    Thanks for any help.

What GPU do you have? (If you don't know, download Speccy, and have a look)

That CPU won't work in your current motherboard. It is manufactured by AMD, and your chip is an Intel. They are completely different generations too. You could overclock your CPU with that motherboard, and easily bump up your speed from 2.4Ghz to 3Ghz. This is the same CPU as I have and I know you will definitely notice a nice performance boost for free. The graphics card you have is a bit long in the tooth and basic so it's holding you back. You would be better served by spending money there, if you don't want to spend a fair bit of money on a new system yet. You could pick up a graphics card cheap second hand on Adverts/Ebay.

Looking at dabs there. would rather buy new then second hand, just out of caution like.

What ya's think of this? 200euro seems reasonable enough.

Do you plan on buying a new computer in the future, or stay with your current one for a long time? The big issue you have long term is not having enough memory or a fast enough CPU to run the latest games i.e. Watch Dogs (an upcomming next gen game) needs a minimum of 6Gb, and recommends 8Gb. You will probably have 4Gb or under in your system, and it will be last gen DDR2. Buying more of this memory is dead money (and expensive) so sooner or later it will make sense to get a new system. That card you linked too would only hold the eventual new system back and is not a good long term investment, so when you upgrade to a new system you buy the best you can afford. To extend the life of your current build I would go with a cheep second hand card, and down the road buy the best new system you can afford new. Try to find the best value under 100 Euro card, and when you buy a new system sell your current system for parts.

    Thanks for any help.

You've an SLI motherboard? Could you get another GTS450? This could be a cheap upgrade: http://www.adverts.ie/other-peripherals/pny-geforce-gts-450-video-card/5153158

If you tell us your power supply specs, we could recommend a new graphics card for you.

Also, could you run a program called Speccy and give us the results?
