Hey guys, I am after leaving my job as a carpenter to go with another company. The boss told me today that it would work out better for him and me if I went self employed as oppose to goin on his books. I have my own van and all the tools already. Any advice would be greatly appreciated as to what ye think about goin self employed, am I mad?

Google 'SOCIAL WELFARE' and 'Self employed' and get back to us.

Self employed is ok if you can maintain steady work...choose your own working hours and conditions. However as Syd rightly points out...if you've no work then don't expect the state to be concerned.

The reason it suits your employer to have you self employed is that he can basically get rid of you whenever it suits him...no holiday pay, no overtime and no worries for him if he get quiet.

Agree with above, also you have to sort out you own public liability insurances, pay for accounts at years end, VAT etc.

Also, forget about that steady wage on a thurs/friday.
