Unless your trying to increase your group I would not advise unless you had a strong background in Engineering and a full workshop behind you, a re crown by a decent bloke costs what €80? Just pay it if you think it can improve your grouping, otherwise leave it be.

I've seen videos of lads doing this, and there are home designed tools (Brownells, etc) you an buy however as said above i would strongly recommend against it.

Unless you know how much, how to, and basically what you're doing you run the risk of destroying the gun and ending up having to pay twice. Once to do it yourself, and another time to correct your mistakes. Also unless the gun is shooting really badly there is no need to re-crown.

Seriously lad save yourself the money and hardship. Go to a professional or just leave it. To me it'd be like using a tap and die set to thread the barrel for a mod. Unless it's exactly right (and i'm talking perfect) you run the risk of clipping the mod and having a catastrophic failure. While a poor crown would not result in such a failure it'll do your head in.

Why do you want to re crown the rifle?. What size is the average group shot with the rifle?. Is there obvious damage to the Crown ? and finally is the bore good at the muzzle ?

Poor accuracy isn't always caused by the crown. Often wear in the bore at the muzzle can cause problems. Usually caused by cleaning with pull through type kits. The Crown can be re cut but I would highly recommend having it done on a lathe with the barrel centered on the bore not the outside of the barrel. Hand tools can be used but you would need a piloted tool to closely fit the minor diameter of your bore. I assume you don't have the measuring tools to get that dimension so you are looking at the cost of bore gagues. A piloted 11 degree crowning tool. Pilot bushings. Postage and of course the chance of destroying your rifle if it goes wrong.

Go to a gunsmith and get it done properly if it is needed.

In one of the first episodes of Nip/Tuck the young lad, Matt, gave himself a home circumcision. It went spectacularly wrong.
Morale of the story - you don't want to be messing around with the end of your shooter;)

A dremel tool on the end of my own thing is not something I'd like to experience.

Have a look at the Midway video's where Larry re-crown's a barrel with a round head screw and grinding paste with a hand-drill

Or cut down the barrel and re-crown

good vids, but i dont think id chance it on a hmr, everything has to be perfect on them,or accuracy will go to pot.
