I'm 16 now and scavenging around towns for part time work over weekends as well as summer work. That said, Ive never tried to apply for any of the big super markets like Lidl or Supervalu. I was wondering do they even take on people as young as 16? Have you heard of anyone working in a supervalu or Dunnes who are under 18? I know Dunnes usually dont take anyone under 18 but what about other store policies? Can anyone explain? I live 3 mins away from Lidl and a job there would be amazing

I know off hand the local Supervalue hires people that are under 18, other places might not if they expect you to be able to work behind the counter (i.e. sell cigarettes and alchohol).

Touché, Honestly I dont want to look like some scut that came in off the street begging for a job.

Uh that makes no sense young man. You will look like someone who is interested in gettin a job. Jobs don't come to people. It's the other way around.

Just next time when you buy some milk ask is the store manager around by any chance then explain and ask her any chance and how do I go on about it. I swear no one in their right mind would think ah here is some scut off the street begging for a job.
Worst thing she'll say is no it's all going through HQ you have to apply in writing. But even that will help you.

Apparently LIDL only accept CVs online

In Lidl you need to have a minimum of 2 years retail experience. Plus they will need someone over the 18, as you need to be 18 to sell alcohol

Where did you hear of this minimum 2 years experience?

My cousin applied a while ago and didnt get it. I was suprised as she has a great CV but under 2 years experience.

And honestly I'm telling you a hunger and desire to work is what you'll show and for 99.9 % of employers that's important . While I don't work in retail it does happen that people cold call in person or on the phone. As long as they aren't rude ( has never happened) I can honestly say I have a good impression of them for getting up off their behind and approaching me directly. Better even than a CV arriving the post or email. At your age what you lack in experience you'll have to compensate for by showing initiative and real desire to work. That might mean begging, so what ?

Read it on a job site before. I know they pay something close to 11.50 an hour for a basic employee, so I imagine they want someone who is efficient and experienced(I imagine it cuts down on training). But I cant imagine it being a horrible place to work as in most Lidls, I have been to, the staff turnover is pretty low

I get a sudden spark of courage every now and again and go round asking for jobs but it gets to a stage where you get turned down so much you stop bothering. However, My CV has improved greatly so I reckon I might go out again looking for summer work. I think Supervalu is my best hope in terms of a job in a ''supermarket''.

You are at a disadvantage as legally you cannot sell alcohol

Most retail stores will want all staff trained on the tills though especially when it's busy on evenings and weekends

I worked in a Supervalu when I was 15, left then when I was doing my leaving at 17. You should be grand.

I think been seen to be keen is the most important thing when starting off at your age. Defo dress up a bit, ask to speak to store manager and have a copy of your cv to hand. Ask about their hiring procedure -application form etc and the likelihood of summer employment.
Are you a TY student? Would your work experience placements be likely to take you on? Or have contacts you could use?
Get in now before the general masses start thinking about the same
Have you considered other shops - centra, londis petrol stations etc
If all else fails approach your principal in school and ask about exam attending. You know the student that sits outside the door during the exam. Handy enough money especially if you get the leaving cert centre as opposed to a junior cert centre (job usually lasts longer).
Are you involved in sports -gaa etc? If so, can you be flexible enough for work? If you're not involved highlight this as a manager might be more willing to hire you if you're not looking to run off early/swap shifts etc due to training & matches

I've noticed that most SuperValu's are heavily involved with JobBridge and tend to take on interns. Quite often I see my local SuperValu's advertising for intern positions. Not sure how likely they would be to take on anybody for paid employment. I'm job hunting at the moment too btw.
