What does it take to mark a property boundary?
Is a physical barrier necessary or simply a marker of some sort?

Depends who your neighbours are. A simple fence should suffice. If your neighbour is Russia then not even an army will do you.

Unless the title comes with some covenant requiring demarcation there is no general obligation to mark a boundary.
