Is this the new thing? People pretending that they don't know Waterford Whispers is fake and posting up links pretending to be outraged or shocked?

The new thing is boring if it is.

Some of my aerican friends still feel that there is sensationalism around these kind of stories but to me it seems like violence on school grounds appears in the news with such regularity that it would worry me if i lived in the u.s

    Oh oh.:)

    It's not real FBR!

ah jaysus come on, many of us could have let that cat out of the bag

better to just let the thread flow and see if things dawn on people!

Oh yes ok :) I knew a lot of the articles were satirical and I didn't read this one - looking at the photo might have been a clue I suppose :s sorry!
But seriously the issue is still there. I would be nervous about kids safety if I lived there.

The whole website is a joke. It's not a lucky dip of which articles are real or fake.

but started a thread with added outrage?

People aren't as worried as you would assume from an Irish perspective. The population of the USA is about 313 million, which makes the proportional risk very very small.

Which doesn't mean that some of the gun laws aren't insane and that it's a very worrying thing.

Obviously the prevalence of school shootings in the US is a problem, but if you consider that they have something like 100,000 schools, statistically speaking your child is unlikely to be involved in one.

Take, for example, the form called ‘fraping’, where you’re raped on Facebook.

Not a great article in that link OP. I think you should go to www.theonion.com for a less biased attitude towards education.

to be fair if you put an Onion article beside a Fox News one and asked someone to see which one is satirical one most people would struggle :pac:

It's not a very good satire - the article is too close to reality.

There *are* way too many school shootings in the USA - and it's true that mental health is the real issue there, not so much gun control.

    How is that satire?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,501 ✭✭✭FullblownRose

Ha,ha. I actuay thought it was a local paper like the Clare Champion or Limerick Leader but with a sense of humour, because I only started folowing the Waterford Whisper yesterday.

The only reason I shared the article here without reading it beforehand was, I took it from Facebook where I too frequently see completely serious articles about high school massacres shared on my news feed, and it didn't occur to me that it was something that a local paper would make a funny satirical article about. I never usually comment when people post about ''another high school massacre'' on A.H but since there have been so many (allowing for the relativey huge population) publicised online I thought I would post about it on A.H- unfortunately I chose the wrong ''news'' article to start the post with. I am glad I gave people a giggle and I am gigging at my mistake. x

In fairness I made a mistake by posting a silly article on impulse and I am happy to laugh along but the derisive comments are a bit mean. I don't consider myself 'stupid' and I would not call anyone else that. What I meant to ask about in my post was peoples opinions of the issue in general. I don't mind which way this goes, take it seriously, or don't, but metal detectors and securty guards are not unusual in American schools. Imagine that was not uncommon where you live.

i think it would lead to more paranoia in our kids.

would make them think "why are these here"?

haha some of the stuff on the WWN is very funny :P

There have been people mistaking Onion articles for real news for years, now we're just getting it a bit more at home because WWN is basically the Irish version on the Onion.

Yes but the onion and daily mash didnt invent high school massacres whie they might make light of or invent stories...do you have an opinion that you'd like to contribute on the very real issue of teenagers killing their classmates or are you just commenting for a cheap laugh? Do I even need to ask!

Why are you specifically calling me out and not the multitude of other people who said nothing about high school massacres?

The WWN article is about going to school being the most dangerous thing to do in America, which is far from the truth.

Of course there are way too many school shootings in the USA, that's why the WWN wrote a satirical article about it, because it's a politically relevant topic. That's what satire is.

I doubt there are any amongst us who haven't mistaken something which was intended humorously or satirically on the internet for the real thing. It doesn't require stupidity, but it's still amusing to see others do so!
