    Having debate with 2 friends.

Basically mate is unemployed for 2 years. My mate said he can still claim certain tax back in that time. I am under the impression he cant. My mate said he got money back when he was out of work for while.

Is this true? I highly doubt you can claim tax if not working, or are there situations where you can?

Depending on your circumstances, some people may be eligible for a refund of paye and Usc paid during the unemployment year.

You are correct. However, if he finished working on 30th June 2012, he probably would have got tax back in 2013 which relates to the 6 months which he worked in 2012. If he didn't work in 2013 and didn't pay tax in 2013, then there is no way that I know where he can get tax back.

He may also have got tax back which related to the previous four years as you can apply for a P21 statement where Revenue will check to make sure that you were not over taxed.

PS if someone finds out how you can get tax back without working, please let me know as I will pack in my job and live on free money
