If you buy in a couple of cows announced as "Calving in march", backed up with a note attached to their cards saying the same, when would you be reasonably expecting the cows to have calved by?
Today's the middle of april and no sign of calves yet, what's my next move?

    Any springing?
    Scan and see

I'd be happy that they are in calf, and one of them looks to have started to make a slight springing!

Do you know when they were served and what's in them?

Natural service, so no AI dates, Carrying to a Rocky Lim bull, both cows are Lim infact one is a PB.

There's cows carrying 300 days (Charlie's cow carried 310), which could bring to nearly 10 months.
Some suckler cows don't show much sign before calving

I agree with Farrell wait it out and see , if you are still unhappy consult your vet.

I suppose they were bought 2/3 months ago.
I understand how long a suckler can carry, and that they don't spring up much, but I'm wondering when does it become excessive.
They were sold as calving in March, what happens if they carry on to May for example?
I wondering at what point do I draw the line?
If they had calved by now, mid April I would have accepted that as reasonable, but to be honest I think it's pushing the boundaries a bit now.

The last calf we had there a week or so ago was in the oven 301 days, a heifer calf too, which was a surprise to me.

Allot has to do with the scanner too.
Lads get cows scanned, not knowing service dates, & go by what scanner says.
Had a heifer 8 months gone scanned (couldn't stop her going up the crush), scanner said 6 1/2M, calved to ai service.
    Have heard of opposite too

but from 6 months on its very hard for scanning person to say definite time, more accurate under 5 months

Say it to the mart manager and see what kind if feed back you get.

A chap who knows his stuff will 99% of the time be able to scan to within a week, Main lad I get to do mine has no problems telling me how long the cow is gone, I usually have the AI dates on a clipboard infront of me, let him fire out a date and if its out it usually means the cow say held to an earlier serve, or the bull etc. My guess in this case is the chap who sold her was chancing his arm. Is there any comeback I don't know however.

Might be worthwhile making sure she is still in calf, if you have the vet out for something else ask them to handle her. If not in calf it will be a hard one to prove whether or not she was in calf when you bought her.

Thanks for all the opinions, I suppose I've waited this long I'll wait another week or 2 and see what happens. Both look incalf, and these type of cows can spring up fairly quick in a few days they can go from zero to sprung up.

Hopefully they'll be worth waithing for!

Yeah, sounds like an idea! It would give some pointers as to how she's likely to go.

I know if she was announced as an April (or May, June.....etc) we wouldn't have bought them.
I'll have to start taking bets on when they'll calve and see would I get some few quid out of it :-)

Both right. One the last few days in April the other today the 10th of may. Both bull calves, both calved unassisted. Today's one is a PB Lim calf, so maybe a future stock bull!
