The Rains of Castamere...

...must be the most overplayed song in any tv show ever. It's starting to really grate any time it comes on, and I was a late adopter of the show, not watching any of it bar the odd random episode until I'd read the books. Anyone agree? We get it, Tywin fùcked over the Reynes, now can we go half an episode without hearing it? I seriously doubt lads would sing it in whorehouses and the likes. Doesn't really fit the mood exactly.

It's irritating me now too: pretty much all we hear are different versions of the Rains of Castamere and the Bear and the Maiden Fair (which I only just realised last week is about Ser Jorah :o - have never been so slow on the uptake in my life!)

I think in the book the song is played repeatedly at the wedding. It's repetition is constant for the Lannisters.

Its nothing to do with Ser Jorah, it would have been written before he was even born...

*SPOILER FOR FUTURE SHOWS* *READ AT YOUR OWN RISK*
The Lannisters are about to be decimated so you won't have to worry about hearing that song for much longer. Pretty ironic considering it's not long ago Cersei was lecturing Margery about houses getting above themselves and being wiped out as a result.

    Interesting.
Is the concept of it hugely different to The Fields of Athenry, which could be sung by drunken irish people in just about any tavern anywhere, including presumably a whorehouse tavern?

I have not read the books, so are you telling me what was said in the spoiler doesnt happen?

Is it just that posters speculation on what is going to happen?

If so I dont think it needed a spoiler really

How to explain without spoiling it? Not really a spoiler:
I would say at the end of all the currently published books several houses including the Lannisters are still in the running for ruling Westeros as per what has been revealed in the show so far though they've all had their setbacks.

I still think anyone spoiling the books by watching the tv show is making a mistake though, the books are some of the best fantasy ever written.

*HUGE SPOILERs* *DO NOT READ NON BOOK READERS*
The Lannisters haven't a hope. Tyrion is banished, Tywin and Kevan dead, Jamie has no interest in politics and Cersei has been shamed and stripped of all power in front of the Kingdom. Vary's is on a mission to make sure Tommen isn't a King and with no one left to protect Tommen, he'll more than likely get his wish.

Don't forget the prophecy that Cersei will outlive all her children and then be murdered by her younger brother. Once Tommen and Myrcella (who are technically Baratheon's are dead, the Lannisters have no claim to the throne. The younger brother is hinted at as being Jamie, though Cersei has always believed it would be Tyrion.

Out of curiosity, why do you think the Lannisters still have a chance?

Right you are... I forgot it had been referenced in the Dunk and Egg stories...

Was thinking it could have been a slagging off of Ser Jorah who's frequently described as not being much to look at, hairy, a Mormont of Bear Island and who once married a "Maiden Fair"... It would have been apt but the timing rules it out.

Im waiting for Jaime to give up the Kingsguard, marry Brienne and have lots of tall golden haired Lannister sons.

Because Ser Robert Strong is coming!
    :D
But seriously, its GRRM doing the writing, anything can happen, the Lannisters still have a massive army and strategic positions to survive Winter, recall Tommen and Myrcella and protect them, get jamie to snap out of it, let Stannis piss off to The Wall, who knows?

Who's in a better position? I dont see GRRM saying "And the Martells came down from Highgarden and took over with a bit of scheming and all was well", do you?

The Lannisters are in debt and that's why they agreed to marry Margery to Joffrey because they needed the Tyrell's money. Cersei really digs their grave when she refuses to pay the Bank of Braavos. The bank always gets it's due, usually by supporting the house of an enemy, in this case Stannis. So the Lannisters have one weak heir who is still too young to rule and an army in the control of the Tyrells. By the end of this the Lannisters will be lucky if they've still held onto Casterly Rock.

Nobody who hasnt read the books should read this post, dont even be tempted...

And if Ser Robert Strong the undead supersoldier wins her trial for her? She'll get it all back and maybe the experience will have sobered her up a bit aswell. The bank thing will probably be fatal in the long run but maybe not. Stannis was already hurt and now Winter is already bleeding him in the north again before Ramsay takes a whack at him, who is left to face the Lannister army?

Not saying Im convinced they're going to win or anything just that they're not dead yet, Tyrion will be back eventually aswell and he's smarter than anyone alse although probably not loyal to whatevers left of his family...

In the book whenever it's mentioned it's either to show dominance (The Lannisters will fúck you up if you cross them) or irony (We'll fúck up the Lannisters if we find any).. The main difference between the books and tv is that the odd mention of it are usually far between in the books, (because of the massive amount of pages) whereas the tv show is condensed therefore we hear it more, plus we hear it rather than just read it and that sticks in the mind longer..

Ever had a song stuck in your head all day long regardless if you like it or not?? Same thing, equally annoying...

My mouse was ready to highlight but decided against it. Working my way through the audiobooks (long driving commute)

What are the audiobooks like? Ive been increasing my range cycling in the Wicklow mountains in the evenings but its getting a bit boring without any music (too dangerous). Might try an audiobook at low volume.

It's still clearly allegorical to Jorah's story imo and probably one or two other characters. Deliberately so.

The audiobooks are great. I read the series the first time and then listened to it the second time. I preferred the audiobooks to be honest because you really get all the details that you might skim over when reading. Also Roy Dotrice, the guy who reads it, has a fantastic voice!

I'd recommend trying a sample. I love audiobooks, never warmed to the asoiaf ones at all though.

I have just got the audio books, havent read anything at all from the books and not normally an audio book kind of guy but I will be commuting over the next few weeks and it is something I would like to try on the journey.

I am up to date with the TV show but as I said, have not read anything from the books, should I bother at all? I love the show, and I love the twists, the surprises and seeing things happen in front of my eyes, will it be somewhat ruined if I read the books and already know what is going to happen?

I may not take to audio books anyway, I like actually reading something :)

I apologise, I know its not the thread to be asking, I just don't really know where to put it!

I thought the books were much better than the tv show but I read the books first. I can see the books getting tedious since you know what's going to happen.
