Running in the Phoenix Park

    Hi all,

I have a few hours to spare in Dublin on Thursday and I'm thinking of heading to the Phoenix Park for a run, probably only about 12/13 kms. I'm starting a taper so an easy jog around is all I'm looking for. I could run around a park in Blanch but I thought I'd make the effort as I've never ran in the Phoenix Park before.

I'll be coming from Blanchardstown so in the Navan Road and entering via the Ashtown Gate.

    My questions:

    Where can I park safely?
Are there any must-do routes that I should make the effort to run?

Park along Chesterfield. Best place. Don't park at Papal cross, won't be very busy there and reports of thefts recently from there.

If you run down Chesterfield and take a right turn, then the next right, it brings you to the famous Kyber road (hill). At the top of that swing left and you see the 15 acres and the 'Munich trail', look out for a little Canadian fella shouting abuse, that'll be quirky.

In the far corner of the park, there is the Fury Glen, definitely worth a visit, just don't stay too long or you may be 'approached' :) .
You'd need more than 12 km to see all the hotspots.

if your looking for trail runs, just as you enter ashtown gate look right and you'll see the trail along the wall. Great running along there and it leads to the main road(Chesterfield). Cross Chesterfield and continue on and youll end up near the furry glen.

Ditto on parking on Chesterfield avenue or alternatively theres a car park in the visitors centre which is close to Ashtown gate. go through the gate and swing left, then take the first right(about 200m after the left).

    Thanks all,

I'm actually blessed where I am living literally 100 mtrs from the Royal Canal but it's great to go somewhere new.

So, I'll park on Chesterfield Ave and go exploring from there.

If it's a quite enough time of day I'd park in the visitors centre at Ashtown, entry via the roundabout at the Aras. It's got plenty of people coming and going, tourist buses, park staff etc. Plus when you're finished your run you can pop into the cafe for some super cake and/or coffee ! It's got toilets there too if you need them.

During the summer, there's an ice cream van at the cross. I always park beside that.

cheers. I often park there during the day but always scarper outa there way before 5 in case I get locked in during the winter. No signs up that I could see with times.

I'm not sure if they actually close the entrance to the car park but I wouldn't want to be held to that, I await drquirky's answer too !

I know during the summer I've been in there for picnics outside of the visitors centres opening hours anyway without issue.
