    what train?
The TGV only goes to Milan. And the connection to Rome takes over 11 hours so is far too long to be stuck on a train (or other form of transport) during the best part of a day.
The night train also requires a change in Milan but at least you spend a good portion of the journey asleep.

and check bahn.de to get a rundown on the various connection possibilities

Thanks for that info!! Have you been on that journey? Is the bahn.de link for trains to Germany?

    no, and yes (but no)

never did the trip but its not something that I'd go out of my way to do either. It might be worth doing if you caught a day in Lyon, Milan and some of the nice cities in Italy - but all at once is literally wasting your time. Leave at 6am or so and land to Rome at 6pm with the best of the day taken up with you couped in a train.
There should be a Ryanair or Easy jet flight that would cost less and take way less time.

and bahn is your reference for trains in and around central europe. Tickets may need to be got from SNCF or the italian train crowd, but for figuring out intercity timetables its great.

ICE trains in Germany are very nice. But they are extremely expensive. They are about twice the flight of flying between major cities

Hate flying. So was looking at the high speed trains as an alternative to getting further south in Europe. I wonder would we be able to overnight in Milan or is it a hop off hop on change.

if you want to avoid flying then its a waste not to see the places along the way OR get an overnight train (as I said above) where you are asleep for the main part of the journey.

You could also get the TGV to Munich, say the 3.30 direct train so you have a good chunk of the day in Paris but still in time for a few pints that evening in Munich.
Then overnight in a hotel Munich and enjoy a day out and about and in the beergardens and then direct overnight train the next evening and you wake up in Rome.

Or the early train to Milan, get a half day sightseeing and then get the last train to Rome.

But either way, theres loads of ways of doing it if you dont want to fly.
