Which of your five senses could you live without?

I woke up this morning & thought I had gone blind! Turns out I was just very hungover & had forgotten to take my contact lenses out last night. Got me thinking though about what it would be like to lose your sight. If I had to chose one sense I could live without I would say smell. How about you?

Smell or taste aren't really vital to survival in todays word. So one of them .

Taste. Would help me shift a few lbs!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,656 ✭✭✭✭Tokyo

Spent a month without my sight after a car accident when I was younger, and suffered hearing damage in a diving accident a few years back, so I can safely say neither of those. My ex had a damaged sense of smell due to medication when she was a child, and she seemed to get by okay, so smell, I guess?!

Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels. Which is a pity, as it's easier to eat a donut than go around feeling up skinny people.

    Sense of humour

But we have at least a dozen senses?
I'd give up my ability to feel itches. It's a discrete type of nerve ending solely responsible for itching sensations.

Does my sense of decency count then? I'd give up that in a heartbeat....

One's sense of duty to one's country. We have elected representatives to pretend to have that on our behalf.

Also, with SatNav we don't need a sense of direction either.

And now that the BAFTA people are giving awards to Mrs Brown's Boys, thus relieving us of the need to exercise our judgement in what objectively qualifies as "funny", I find that having a sense of humour is an unnecessary and unwelcome distraction.

That's your sense of touch, give that up and you won't feel if something is burning etc, or ever enjoy sex again.

Taste for me. I eat for energy, but I'm not particularly fussy about food.

Taste for me too, touch is important for your mental health.

No it's not. It's distinct from your sense of touch, which properly speaking is your sense of pressure. There's multiple different types of nerves in your skin to account for heat, cold, pressure and itching. so you can concievably lose your ability to sense cold, but not pressure, etc.

What's that sense where I keep seeing dead people? I could do without that one...

Is the Fear a sense? Cos I could definitely do without that today.

All the sensory receptors are considered to be grouped into the sense of touch.

    Even Spidey senses?

Being someone who has anxiety issues I would happily lose my fight or flight sense. That horrible rush of adrenalin that happens for no reason with anxiety and stops you being able to enjoy life normally.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,821 ✭✭✭fussyonion

I suppose smell, since I have problems with my nose anyway: one nostril always seems blocked and I'm forever sniffing and trying to clear it.

There are at least nine senses, and possibly over twenty, depending on how you categorise them.

Hunger is actually a separate sense. I guess I could live without that.

You gotta have Hunger man. Where would Rocky be today without his hunger?

Losing your sense of taste would be horrendous. Every time you eat, it would feel like you are trying to force yourself to eat cardboard. Eating would become a horrible and dreaded chore you had to endure multiple times a day.

But as some have said, the plus side is you'd almost definitely lose weight.

Who, by you? By the way, ocular nerves, olfactory sensors are all sensory receptors too, they're all grouped into the sense of touch?
It's blatant you don't know what you're talking about. The scientific consensus has, for many decades, been that we have many more senses than the old antiquated idea of just five.

    Touch.

Then I could fly around tasting music and colour and scent, and no one could constrain me.

Smell. Then I won't have to smell the gross ciggy smoke from everyone who still has that nasty habit. <barf>

Cleaning out the cat's litterbox is no fun either.

I would hate to lose my sense of smell. Smells remind me of things and places, they can bring back memories in an instant.

Definitely smell. The OHs guinness farts confirmed it this morning!

Love food too much to lose taste, some things are just too delicious to never taste again.

Yeah there are loads. Close your eyes hold your arm out in space and you know exactly were it is and can touch it with your other hand without looking.

Probably smell.. My kids could continue to tell me how smelly my farts are so we would be OK there, and I could continue to drag wife's head under duvet for a sniff too as I always know they're mighty good..
