Did they??? Only reason I can think of why is he was quite a poor producer, and decent demand, it was always hard enough to get straws for him.

I think it was his conception rates, not a major lot seemed to hold.

It's down to him being a put producer of semen, so less straws will be available

Yes it is down to his conception, your spot on. Was reliably informed of this by a PG rep. It's a shame as he was a nice balanced bull.
Rep said he worked out fine on some farms but they couldn't explain awful conception rates on a considerable number of herds so have decided to stop taking semen from him in last month or so

I had no problem with him- 32 calves from 50 straws

2/3 conception is hardly spectacular although sometimes conception from AI can be poor.

i remember in ag college a lecturer was saying infertility is hereditary, would it follow through if the there was problems with the sire would the offspring have problems too

are you for reel. 2/3 would be industry leading

    take a 100 cow herd

submit 100 cows at 50 days calved
so at 66%conception would be 66 cows at 330 day calving interval

next serve 34 cows at 71 days 22 in calve at 351 days

next serve 12 cows at 92 days 8 in calf at 373 days

last round of 4 at 113 days 3 incalf at 394 days

    one empty cow
and a 345 day calving interval

    industry leading i think

Rep told me that he is just 3-4% lower than acceptable levels, plenty of guys still using him on heifers etc...

Strange response, 2/3 conception is superb. And the thread is about using ABO straws, so if AI is poor, the only option left is to bring the cow to him!

Heard this a few weeks back,I've 20 straws by him and will use them all.ges a very well balanced bull and I've a good few calves on the ground by him this year

We would only have small numbers of cows but I thought that 1/3 of cows repeating would be high. I'm probably wrong though.
It's not a strange response in terms of using the straws. If I gave you the option of using straws with a bad conception rate (I presume you would agree that 10% for arguments sake would be bad) would you use them.
Stan gave figures for his results with the straws and I gave my opinion on them. I am wrong on it but that's the point of the OP starting the thread. They wanted advice and debate on the merits of the bull.
There's another alternative to bringing the cow to the bull if you don't like his straws and that is pick a different bull from the catalogue.
If the op has the straws I would think that they would probably use them if everything else was right other than the conception rate being low (which I accept that I was wrong about.)

    Fair enough

When BHZ his sire was being used a number of members of my discussion group complained of the conception rates of his semen.
