Hi Lads. My mate is looking for a car. He doesn't care if it's underpowered, but we were now browsing adverts and donedeal and there are shocking prices like 850 for a 2004 and 1400 for a 2005 both are 1.4 Is this because it drinks a lot of fuel. I was reading on other forums that the fuel consumption is about 9l in city driving is this true. Is this why they are so cheap? or is it because they are rubbish. I have driven one before and it is a stable car on the motorway and all and it goes really well but it was a 1.5 dci. So what about the 1.4?

That generation Megane along with Laguna are cheap for a good reason. They are an electrical nightmare, constant problems with card keys, window regulators and ignition coil packs. He might find a good one but that will boil down to pure pot luck. Would not bother with the potential hassle myself to be honest.

Currently getting 45mpg @ 80km/h, 38mpg @ 120km/h from 1.4 and that's using unbranded petrol on an engine with 159,000 miles (255,000 km) clocked up.
Had all of those in defects at one stage or other over the past 8 years of ownership but certainly not constant problems.
Coil packs are deemed consumables, same as on many other cars. Noticeable as a lumpy idle and low power/splutter during revving/driving. One coil per plug, cheap and a few minutes to replace but best replaced in pairs. Replaced 2 about 7 years ago and the other 2 about 3 years ago.
Original window regulators are a well known failure but once replaced should be fine, mine are fine since done 7 years ago under warranty. A Renault dealer should be able to check if they were previously replaced under warranty. Usually it's a module (ironically German made) that dies but there are guys online who will repair or sell replacements.
Key cards can develop broken solder joints internally, usually from keeping card in ar5e pocket. Had mine repaired without recoding.

Inner tie rods tend to fail every few years but again it's a cheap repair. You'll notice this by a slight steering knock when going over ramps or rough surfaces.
