The Father Kelly Phenomenon

I'm in no doubt that folks here have heard of the Priest of all Priests known as Father Kelly. That chap seems to be popping up all over the place and in some quarters receiving some degree of criticism. I've seen a lot of comments calling him 'overrated', or that the story isn't even news in the first place.

Father Kelly himself said even though he could potentially make quite a few bucks out of it he said he'd prefer the priesthood. Do you think this is a mad decision? Very few people in their own jobs, no matter how much they love it, would almost always leave their job if some massive opportunity came their way. The thing is, Father Kelly could himself donate to the church while operating as a professional performer around the world and kill two birds with the same tone.

So a) do you think it's a daft decision for him to remain in the priesthood given this opportunity and b) is the whole thing overrated and not even newsworthy in the slightest.

Here's a clip from tonight's performance if you're in any way equivocal

That would be an ecumenical matter.

Honestly, no, but it did randomly come into my mind as I was writing it! :)

It's a bit like a postman who moonlights as a burglar, kinda "off". Pick one.

That's all I could think of when I saw the video first. And though he is a good singer, I just couldn't bring myself to watch it to the end.

As a singer, good for the pub circuit. Singing priests we have had in abundance.

Should he leave the priesthood to make a fortune though? He already said on the Late Late Show how he could easily achieve this given the offers he's had already, and continuing to pour in.

Seeing as he's a priest he's obviously a spiritual person.

"No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money."

    Matthew 6:24

    F = MA

Does this mean that if he sang with greater acceleration, that it would increase the force of his performance?

Hallelujah has to be the most depressing piece of music ever created. I thought it was quite funny a few years ago when the X Factor winner was obligated to release this as her Christmas song (even though she didn't like it herself, but those are the rules), and some "real music" gobsh'ites started a campaign to get the even worse Jeff Buckley version to number one instead. An awful song sang by a dead guy is no better than an awful song won by a reality tv show winner no matter how much you want to pretend otherwise.

Fame and fortune is a miserable existence as far as I can see.

Poor fecker must be inundated now with requests from couples to do their weddings and sing a "special surprise song" for them because once people see something on tinternet, original thoughts evaporate from their heads.

He's a fairly poor singer. Have heard better down my local after closing time.

Anyone who thinks otherwise needs their ears tested.

could you get a recording of those singers please, I'd love to hear them, because I thought the priests voice was pretty good.

I think people were more surprised about how he approached the wedding with those new lyrics rather than focussing on his voice.

Just to clarify for the philistines who might misinterpret your post - the song was written by the rather amazing Leonard Cohen, who is still going strong at 79.
Here he is playing Birmingham last September:

I don't understand all these other couples looking to get him to do the same their weddings. Ok, it was unusual and probably a nice surprise the first time and maybe the second if you weren't aware of the first but would it really have the same impact if you know it's coming?

it's the same with those Irish dancers at wedding receptions. i remember the first wedding I was at that had them and thought it was great as it was different and I'd never seen it before but when I see them weddings now, I think to myself not this crap again.

I can't watch that video. Did the audience clap during the song? First fscking time ever if they didn't. Bastards on the late late always clap. :(

He REALLY does a really good mass :), a very humble man as well, I know him personally! Its great for the town as well. Can get you all backstage passes, signed Bibles, etc :p He gets a great kick out of it, fair play to him.

I know full well Leonard Cohen wrote the original. However, as he is alive, his version is not considered as the best, as a dead guy cover it, and if you are dead, you are clearly more talented.

Every version of this horrible song is awful.

Irish people can be bought for very little. There's one for everybody in the audience.
Let's face it, Irish TV are just talking the sly piss out of him and them.

A lovely man. The OP asked why doesn't he jack in the Priesthood and go full time in entertainment.

The Priesthood is a vocation and it takes a long time to get there, it's not some bullsh1t 9 to 5 sitting behind a computer screen waiting for the weeken gig. Some people follow and achieve their ambitions. It's not a job to him, it's what he wants to do.

You don't have to work to earn well in the priesthood - I mean, all they do is eat and drink a few times a week with the public and listen to a couple of embarrassing moments in the sacristy or the brown box.

Does anybody under 50 take priests seriously as in believe they have magic powers to turn bread and wine into actual flesh and blood of a guy who died 2000 years ago?
