Only played it the once. Loved it, playing partners not so much. Hope it does reopen.

So that you can play it with someone else next time ? Should really enjoy it then.

16th is a great hole from the tee...

Not what I'm saying at all. It's a course that divides opinion, which is a good thing.

Definitely a polarising course. First time I played it I thought meh. Played it a few more times last year and liked it more and more each time, it grows on you.

Nice course alright, but I'd still be hoping its gone for good. The sooner these types of marginal existence courses shutdown, the sooner normal viable golf course/club service can resume on a more secure financial basis.

Whoever bought it now owns an asset without Celtic Tiger era debt and legacy operating costs etc so they effectively get to hit the financial reset button, implement a business model which reflects the target market they are going after (local membership driven "traditional" type club or golf tourist destination type venue etc) and run the club accordingly. It may be unfair to the local clubs they are competing with that Moyvalley gets to wipe their debt and start again like this but that's life.

Does anyone know who the new owner is and what their re-opening plans are?

    Ben

I would rather see the likes off kilcock, knockanally, high field an other low standard courses in the area go, and the likes of moyvalley an rathcore thrive, looks like its there to stay for the foreseeable future

Where are you a member Eoinyh? First time I've heard of someone that wants to see golf courses go under.

Think saveourlyric was the one who mentioned golf courses going, I'm just responding to that, hence If courses were to go I'd rather see lower standard ones go.

I'd no idea it was closed, when did that happen?

Is it just the course or the whole complex closed/sold?

It closed in January, its reopening in may, the course has been maintained through the months it was closed, yeah the whole place was sold

    True.
As long as one its neighbours bites the dust pretty soon, but the likelyhood is they will try and limp on, struggling to stay open, poorly maintained because of too little income and too few members. And Moyvalley will struggle to maintain such a big course to a good standard also.

We need about 30 course to go back to meadow. When one is on the floor Id prefer to see it knocked out rather than standing back up to continue the struggle and extend the intensive care struggle of so many courses.
The golfers of 10 years ago arent coming back you know.

The thread title promised some happiness but some of the posts in here are really depressing.

Moyvalley under Nama was never going to do anything but sit an wait for the right time for it to be sold, I'm sure who ever bought it know what there up against, probably have the money to maintain it, lawman that's just reality, ur a member in rathcore what was ur deciding factor in joining there besides location if u life near by

Nice course. Nice people and very good value. Wouldn't like/wish any course going under to benefit Rathcore.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 130 ✭✭Eoinyh

I'm sure there are nice people in every club, so if rathcore was struggling an a lower standard course beside it was to go and it would benefit rathcore, I'm sure ud find the other club wouldn't be of too much concern to u,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,331 ✭✭✭the lawman

As it happens Rathcore has taken some Moyvalley members on a good deal while they get sorted. I still hope Moyvalley gets back open even though it benefits my club they stay closed.

    Hope that answers your question.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 130 ✭✭Eoinyh

No, there is no good will there, if rathcore can hang on to 20 of them members if would be of great benifit to rathcore, fact straight from the horses mouth, an he is dead right to take that approach its business, an no it does not answer the question" if rathcore was struggling would it really bother u if a lower standard course beside u closed an helped rathcore" I wouldn't think so

I'm not interested in getting into a hypothetical conversation here. I don't agree with your opinion that a lot of (30 I believe was it) courses should close down to benefit others.

Ur dead right not to get into the conversation because if you had read the thread from the start you might be able to follow the conversation and realise what I am saying, not taking parts of other members posts and saying I said it.so I think me and you will just leave it at that.

My apologies it wasn't yourself who mentioned the 30 courses. Ill take that bit back.

I don't agree with your sentiment in any way at all. Just the way I feel on it. No matter what hypothetical question is asked on it will make that opinion change. Not looking to change yours mind I just find it depressing.

Good article in the Liffey Champion this week. Seems like new owners have great plans for the place. Got the resort for next to nothing and big investments are underway. Wonder what that means for the golf course...

Played scramble on it last year from the back markers . The longest course I have ever played. It was Driver and 3 wood to most holes. We didn't bogey a hole and had 5 birdies. We didn't birdie the short par 4 15th Hole. But one of the lads I was playing with hit one of the best 3 woods on the 16th hole to a few inches.

Golfers expectations to-day are for courses with sand based Tee boxes and Greens.
Courses with good drainage and well presented Fairways that recover quickly after heavy rain is also a requirement.
Moyvalley, Rathcore, Craddockstown, Castlewarden, Naas, Kilcock, Trim and Millicent all fit the 'bill' as far as I know. Perhaps members of these courses will confirm if they fit the 'bill' as described.
The likes of Knockanally, Highfield & Bodenstown are simply not up to standard with their Tee boxes and Greens. (I understand Bodenstown is now closed).
    Is the above fair comment?

I wasn't impressed with the drainage in Rathcore. Nice course otherwise.
