Having played golf for almost 16 years with my handicap hovering around 14 to 16 I have always struggled with my irons...no confidence and lots of shanks !!!!
So in an effort to prevent me from quitting altogether i replaced them with a few high lofted woods and just one iron ,a 56 degree sand wedge for all close in shots ..... the results were great bringing me into single figure territory for the first time...has any of you had similar though i do feel a bit odd with the one iron in my bag!!!!

If your pushing single figures with only 1 iron then that's extraordinary.

Would like to see it in action.

I'm trying to crack single figures myself but would be the opposite. Happyish with irons but struggle with the woods / driver

What clubs have you got for shots from 100-150 yards or so?
Do you just punch the ball into greens?

So what club do you use from 140 ?

I'm the opposite - can't hit a fairway wood to save my life.

if u are straight off the tee with the driver u can adapt a similar smooth swing with the woods..the loft and your swing speed will determine the distance...works for me..

    Again I'll ask,

What do you hit into greens from 100-150 yards out?

But do you take a full swing with the s/w.

What is the difference of a full swing with a s/w to an 8 iron.

I think , if you can't hit an 8 iron there is something seriously wrong with your swing and - you should have tried to solve it.

Well done all the same - but I couldn't handle not hitting an iron.

    150 a 9 wood 120 / 130 an 11 wood and a 13 from 100 /120....most of these shots are all carry so it can vary..

Well done, - did you ever try solve the iron issue.

Just can't see you having ball control with a 13 wood that you would have with an iron.

I think you will have a limit to how far you can get with that type of golf.
You will get to single figures as you have said - but hard to see you get lower than that.

    Still - well done.

Throw up a photo of your bag there, would love to see an image of a bag with just 1 iron in it.

Welcome to the forum too btw

Totally see your point op, if I was confident with the coal shovel and it was legal I'd whack the hell out of it.

I wonder if you are playing mostly links golf?
I could see it being easier to run those clubs in rather than looking to stop your ~150 yard shots.
There can be lots of stop needed on those distances if you are coming down near single digits.
All the more impressive if it's on a long tight parkland IMHO.

I love this idea, a 13 wood must be about 45 degrees? so hits it high and probably stops on the spot. Aim for the centre of the green and probably will be closer that the shot I hit in.
    A fairly handy player at my club carries a 3 & 4 iron, 5 hybrid, 6-PW irons

    A 13 wood would (;)) be about 33-35* afaik.
    An 11 wood around 31*, or a 6iron replacement.

There are rare manufacturers that will make a 25 wood, 55* as a SW replacement.

The yardages don't really add up if you ask me.

Right so loft increases by woods are obviously only 1/2 degrees as you go up to the higher woods. I think Hybrids might make more sense, they definitely make hybrids to replace your wedge.

A 26deg hybrid might have to bought and see how it would replace my 5 iron

Just getting info from the net:

    3 wood: 15*
    5 wood: 19*
    7 wood: 23*
    9 wood: 27* (rare)
    11 wood: 31* (extremely rare)
    13 wood: 35* (extremely rare)

All are approximates and can vary obviously.

But as a guide for every jump of 2 woods (3->5) you're going up about 4*

If the OP is hitting the 11 wood 130yards then he is hitting the approx loft of a 6 iron in that club.
    So he's going from ~ 35* (his 13 wood) to a 56* SW.... That's some gap.

Would be nice to see a photo of the bag. I'm struggling to believe it tbh.

I have a pal in the states who has a similar set except he doesn't carry a SW either. It's a full set of "woods" which looks really odd to me but it works for him. I wouldn't worry about the gaps, as long as there's a good yardage spread the lofts are irrelevant.

As a previous poster said though if you can't strike a short iron solidly then there's something very wrong with your swing and I think you should be getting that sorted instead of trying to find woods with crazy lofts to hit. Just my opinion
