Avensis - Toyota Bluetooth hands-free kit problem - no sound

    Hi All,

The parents have a 08 Avensis (03-08 model) and there's a Toyota Bluetooth hands-free kit built in, has the controls on the steering wheel etc.

Last week the sound from the hand-frees stopped working, so when someone rings you while in the car the radio cuts out but you cant hear anything (the person on the other end can hear you so the microphone is still working).

Even when going into the settings for the hand-free you can't hear the voice telling you the options (it does go into the settings correctly as the radio will cut out). When on the radio the speakers work fine and the phone connects to the Bluetooth fine.

Any ideas what could be wrong here?

Did you check behind the radio to see if there is a loose connection?
That would be where I would start. I have the same car with a lower spec (dont have bluetooth etc) but I can tell you how to take her apart. If your in cork I can show you.

Very appropriate username toyotaavensis, thanks for offer of help

I had the radio out and re-plugged everything with no luck, however I couldn't actually find the hands-free unit itself, which I presume is a separate unit and not built into the radio. I can see the microphone goes in behind the interior light in the roof so maybe I can trace that wire to find the unit itself.

If it is the hands-free unit that's gone dodgy I imagine a new unit from Toyota is quite expensive so will have to go down the Parrot route, but having it all built in was very good and clutter free.

I wouldnt give up just yet. I have the service manual for the car somewhere on my work computer.
If you PM me your email I can send on the bit about the bluetooth tomorrow. It might help.

When you say it has the Toyota Bluetooth kit, is it the one part of the navigation or seperate unit

No there is no Sat Nav in the car. I believe its a separate unit that is attached to the radio . There is a 'mode' button on the steering wheel that gives access to the options and microphone in the roof, other then that there are no other signs to say there is Bluetooth, i.e. when you look at the radio itself there are no phone buttons. It's all worked through the steering wheel controls.

There is a manual in the glove box for Toyota Bluetooth hands free kit, so its defiantly a Toyota unit and not an after market option (although maybe it was installed by certain dealers when it was sold, its a Sol spec so has nearly everything else option wise bar the Sat Nav).
