Black & white "wasp"?

    For some reason, an old memory just popped back in to my head, so I decided to post here.

    I saw a black and white wasp in my garden a few years ago. Are these albino wasps? It was exactly the same as a wasp, except the stripes which should have been yellow were in fact white/grey. Anybody see these before? I've only seen it once in my life. Thanks.

    I suspect the insect you saw may have been a hoverfly. There are about 180 species in Ireland, some of which mimick bees and wasps. There is an overview of the hoverflies found in Ireland here:
