And change the red light to green and the green to red.

Alot of motorists struggle to comprehend three lights, never mind a fourth.

“Maybe we should consider introducing a light between amber and a red. Could you convey this to the authorities. The amber light isn’t working. When people see it, they speed up. We will cut out all traffic accidents.”

That sounds like the ramblings of a child.

Or a deranged Mr Burns telling smithers to get in the model plane he whittled.

    The fudge???

It'll be a rainbow of colours in no time if we start that sh*te.

If we adopted the Uk scheme, it would help a lot of drivers.

You'd hope so. The "could you convey that to the authorities " bit comes across very "hey you, underling, I'm the ideas man, go get some peasants to make it reality".

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 865 ✭✭✭MajorMax

The problem isn't the amber light. I see people not even stopping for red anymore. The attitude seems to be that it's only a little red, I'm not sure what shade of red these muppets are waiting for.

We need to put cameras on every stoplight, it'd generate a lot of income for the state and at the same time stop this incredibly dangerous trend

When I started driving in Ireland after years driving in 'merica a good few years ago now, I stopped for an amber light like you're suppossed to do and I got rear ended by a delivery van. My first brand new car, it was only 8 months old

    Stupid idea.

What we should actually have is left turn on red and amber before green.

This would keep travel moving much more than it does currently.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,734 ✭✭✭J_E

Why not just have red and green for drivers? It's either okay to drive or it's not.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 64 ✭✭CNTRLR

what is needed is camera on junctions and large fines for idiots jumping red lights, including ministers and their convoys...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 818 ✭✭✭Triangla

Maybe a sign that says "The first two seconds of red light is not a green light".

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,326 ✭✭✭waraf

I find that using my butler to walk in front of my car waving a red flag is the safest way to travel :)

The system in Canada whereby some sets of lights have cameras built-in and take a picture when you run a red light is a good one. Fines in the post tend to discourage bad driving behaviour.

I'd suggest an additional feature where if a cyclist runs a red light then a taser is fired towards then. A more 'on the spot' form of punishment.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,210 ✭✭✭Pedro K

Most Irish drivers don't even know what an amber light means.* A blue light would confuse the bejaysus out of them.

*before anyone says it, it doesn't mean slow down, prepare to stop or any of that other crap that's regularly spouted.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,829 ✭✭✭Nemeses

I'm not too sure how an extra light would solve this issue..

Just put a barrier on each junction with a traffic light.

If the barrier comes down through your convertible roof whilst you're driving through a red light... well, Good enough for ya!

Willikins drives the armoured Bentley for me - he's a vicious little bastard, and usually armed to the teeth in interesting ways.

Quite. It actually means "Incoming!"

    I've said it before.

If they had the opposite lights go green two seconds before the others go red, people would soon kop on.

Why not introduce on the spot fines of €1000 for breaking lights. This would generate a lot of money and pay for someone to be employed at every junction to implement. Drives me fuucking mad when motorists break red lights, as if twenty seconds of their lives is worth more than all of a pedestrian's life.

Have the red light arm a landmine under the stop line.

Fast forward 10 years time : The blue light isn't working, put in a purple one.

    Green
    Amber
    Blue
    Purple
    Red

    \o/ Wooohoo TRAFFIC LIGHTS DISCO

instead of red lights, those automatic bollards that raise up out of the road..

irish government could post 'caught driver footage' up on youtube, and make even more revenue

That's unfair. Maybe some sort of air cannon to knock them off instead?

Amber lights go back to penal times, it means that only protestants (orangemen) can proceed, catholics (green) have to wait behind them

  • Site Banned Posts: 4,415 ✭✭✭MilanPan!c

One thing is true, the Irish don't give a **** about red lights. In my decades in America I saw people run red lights maybe once every 12-18 months. Here it's more like once every 4-6 weeks.

And sure if they guy in front of you is running a red light, why not join in?

    It's incredible.

I think they must have changed it because thats all I see now. To add insult they not only break lights but do so at top speed!

This will now be present at every junction in Ireland.

Sure if you're going to break a red light, you would want to be quick at it. So explains the top speed.

To support drivers who feel a little sad and lonely behind the wheel.

If they put cameras on every traffic light that started recording as soon as the lights turned red and fined everyone who breaks the light then people would soon get the message. 4 offences and they're automatically banned for 3 months. The government would generate huge revenue from it as traffic light abuse is rampant in this bloody country.

They also need to adopt the UK method of an Amber light before green so idiots are ready to go on green and not day dreaming and then faffin about trying g to find first gear 10 seconds after the light changes green. Count down timers on each light also aid the flow of traffic as people know when their turn is coming and again means they're ready to move when the light changes.

Just stop giving licences to mongs that shouldn't be allowed to drive a golf car, let alone a car.

Isn't that what pedestrians do regardless of the colour of lights?

Doesn't have to be at the lights at all. Step out onto the road and push a pram out while they're at it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 980 ✭✭✭stevedublin

Is there a meaning to this new blue light?

It means to slow down as the red light soon follows.
It hasn't been decided to introduce it yet though.

Its that delay from the daydreamers that causes more of the red light running imo. Opposite traffic is going to be slow off the line, so easier to risk it, and those behind the daydreamers are irritated by the lack of progress, and barrel through the lights.

Lend a camera and a yellow jacket to everyone on the dole and let them capture images of cars/buses/trucks/cyclists/pedestrians breaking the lights. The snapper get €20 from every successful fine gathered into the govt. coffers.

    I'm older than Minecraft goats.

I only really drive around the south side of Dublin, and around Dublin a few times a week.

I have noticed that the idea of traffic laws basically don't exist outside of the few major cities.

    It's pretty pathetic.

We do have that on some traffic lights. Maybe half the problem is there is no set way that Irish traffic lights work.

Despite being told our traffic lights in Galway are managed, I don't see any management, I've been sitting at traffic lights alone yet the lights go through their regular cycle as if it was still rush hour.
