    Hi everyone,

Hope I'm posting this in the right place. Have been going through an awful lot lately and have had a really bad few months. I'm seeing a counsellor, but was with my GP today and he's given me a prescription for Prozac (20mg per day)

Just wondering if anyone knows roughly how much I should expect to pay per month?

If you have a medical card, €2.50.

If you don't, then it's a private transaction between you and the pharmacy you purchase it from. The pharmacist buys it in for a set price (agreed between the Government and manufacturer) and he then sets the selling price at whatever he thinks he can get for it in the local market conditions, and the patient chooses either to pay that price or shop around. There is no set selling price for any drug.

If you're concerned, ask the pharmacist how much it will be before you get the prescription dispensed.

Because of the number of variables, I will not price a prescription until I actually see it.

However, all of that being said, your Prozac should work out at considerably less than 50c per day.

I don't have a medical card. Do you have any idea of a rough price even? I mean closer to €20 or closer to €80?

With respect, did you read my reply?

"...considerably less than 50c a day..." was much closer to €20 than €80 the last time I looked.

The patent has run out for prozac now so there should be generics; meaning competition.

I'd say it's probably very cheap - 12 euro for a month if you asked me to take a wild guess.

Since the generic came on to the market i'm spending approximately twenty five euro for sixty milligrams a month.

    That's a high dose though - maximum I think.

One thing i'd really recommend is shopping around. I've seen a difference of €20 a month on one medication between 2 chemists. if you find it cheaper somewhere else but would prefer to go to your local pharmacy bring them the cheaper quote and they may be ale to match it. Incidentally Boots were the cheapest I found.

There are generics, but the price of the original has come down so much that the difference is marginal.

What has the difference in prices between Losec and its generics got to do with the difference in prices between Prozac and its generics?
