So the Turbo on my Mondeo is going. Since I don't have the cash to replace the car and it also needs a few other bits done, anyone know what is involved in getting at and replacing the turbo? I have a good contact to get a reconditioned one. The car is 1.8TDCi 6speed Mondeo. I am thinking it will cost me north of €500 for parts and labour.

The kicker is I only replaced the DMF and clutch this time last year. Half thinking of going petrol again...

They are not bad to do but most of it has to be done from underneath.

    where are you based ??

Thanks for the reply. I have had a second opinion, might not be the turbo after all. Need to find what is going on, few other problems with the car as well.

I have a post in another thread on the main forum rebuilding a turbo, I'm on the phone so can't link it. It's not difficult to do

Make sure the shaft isn't grooved/scored. See if the compressor wheel has touched the housing. Above all find out why it went and address that first.

The kit I got was £50 and was for all K03 turbos, what one have you got?

The car is giving issues with the central locking. I have been told that the exhaust is blowing and this could be why the turbo is acting up. Even if I fix / replace the turbo, I will not know if it is right until I replace the exhaust. Once I get the exhaust replaced I will try one of the cleaning kits. Hopefully the Turbo is fine.

Might be no harm to get another diagnosis that all sounds very odd mechanical part of the turbo is either ok or its not there is no inbetween.

If you rebuild a turbo, but don't balance the shaft, you are asking for trouble.
Not worth it, waste of time.
New Turbo is way too expensive and 2nd hand from scrap yard is buying someone else's problems, so also a no go.
There are many places now that will swap your old turbo for a recon one, or even rebuild the old one and properly balance it, so you can avoid zzzzzzzeeeeeeeeeeeegrgrgrgrgrgrggrgrggrrrrrrrrBLAM!

But apart from that, who told you the central locking acting up was related to the turbo?
They should reconsider their career! :P

Ah jasus, they guys I deal with know the central locking and turbo are not related, The car is being very hormonal at the minute. Several things need fixing and most costing min. €100. Getting a right PIMA with the car at the minute.

As for the Turbo, if I need it replaced I will be getting a reconditioned Turbo from someone I know very well. I am not spending anywhere near €1000+ for a new one.

Yep, swapping old turbo for recon is the way to go, you will get credit toward the knackered one.
