Hi, looking for some advice. We are going to be building a few replicas and need 3 base vehicles. we need them to be,
    1 Pre '84
    2 6 cyl petrol
    3 Rear wheel drive
    4 Tax book
    5 Not too dear
The plan is to be able to drive these on the road and we need the 6 cyl engine for the sound, doesn't need to be overly powerful. It would be nice to use 3 of the same vehicles for ease of spare parts.
    Any suggestions?

V6 or straight 6 or does it matter?

What kind of budget are you looking at?

Straight 6, Low buget, few hundred a piece. The vehicle will be scrapped. All we need are engines, steering, front and back axles.

BMW E24? Loads have fallen victim to rust and are beyond economic repair now.

You can just move it back out of Classics again...he's looking to scrap 3 classics to make kit cars.....

Se Conman, I have a Mercedes 280E, that I will probably break, as the body is in very poor condition. It is 1983 Reg., I have applied to Dept. of Transport, here in Shannon, for Log Book, which they tell me will take a" few Weeks " It has a 2.8, 6 Cyl. Eng. Auto. Box. Rear wheel Drive, I will strip the car, and take Lights, Doors, complete interior, Front & Rear Windscreen, Bonnet & Boot Lid. It does drive, but the exhaust is blowing badly. You can trailer away the rest for E400. I also have a Mercedes 230 CE, but that is a 4 CYL. & Auto Box which is already partly scrapped, but still driving. If you are interested, Phone me.

I'd rather see old classics chopped up and the parts reused rather than complete and rotting away in a field somewhere.

I know someone who breaks kit cars and repatriates the misappropriated parts

Merc is probably your best bet if you want 3 of tbe same car

three less Mercs might not be a bad thing.... :-)

This is one of the vehicles that we will be building so any rusted out classic will be a worth while sacrifice IMHO. Thanks for the advice but is it necessary to hold a debate on this thread about the pros and cons of reuse of classics?

It is now you got moved to the Classic Forum. Looks like an interesting project, but belongs elsewhere IMO

That is why I posted it elsewhere, still don't see the need to clutter up the thread with debate. I more commonly post in another section where it would be seen as thread spoiling but thanks all for the help.

Reliant scimitar is your car. 3.0l 6 cylinder.very easy to remove the fibreglass body and quite a few of them lying around.
And being pre 1980 no NCT required

From the looks of the vehicle you're making I'd definitely recommend an old ford transit or a Sherpa?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 981 ✭✭✭se conman

It's easier for us to make a chassis the way we want it than to modify a Transit or Sherpa.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,423 ✭✭✭Merrion

In that case wouldn't you be better without a donor vehicle at all? Do a scrapheap challenge on it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 981 ✭✭✭se conman

Yea but handy to get engine, box, wiring loom, driveshaft, back axle, front axle and wheels all together.

You may need the truck axel and suspension to carry the weight of that thing.

those wheels are going to be hard to replicate

Quite a number of those armoured cars were Lancia (Kappas). I once saw them in the Inchicore Works where they were originally modified. They may now be in the Ulster Transport Museum.
Why did you choose those particular cars ?

So plywood with a 2mm skin of steel?

where abouts are you, I would be interested in following this build.

Semi-bright box frame with 1.2mm steel sheeting skin edged to give a 1/4" thick appearence.
Based on the Austin Armoured Car because this is 2014 which leads to 2015 which leads to 2016 which is 100 years after 1916.
The plan is to build An Austin, A Crossley Tender and ARR2

Track width is going to be an issue, a Big car like a w123 is still only 1.7 m wide while an austin armoured car is over 2m wide, thars a bit of a difference.

the other thing is the wheel size, you are planning to double it, the diff and gearbox may not be up to that.

I would be looikng for something in a van/truck from the early 90's theres probably a system in place for this sort of historic replica if you need to put it on the road

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 981 ✭✭✭se conman

I have the blueprints downloading at the min. Another option we have is to make a fake diff housing and axle tubes and run Sierra backend in in the fake axle. We can make the halfshafts any lenght we want and change the diff ratio.

    I also have a w123 280e 1979
I don't really want to get rid of it but I have neither the funds nor time to get it back on the road. It has a great interior but ropey body. I had it up on a lift last week though and was told that the chassis is solid.
Engine is great there's a little smoke out of the exhaust manifold probably just needs a new gasket. €500 and she's yours.

W123, I may well be interested, I already have 2, 280E, but both need some work and parts. If I bought yours, I could hopefully make 2 out of the 3 of them. give me a call, and we can discuss it further. Don't PM me, as I dont know how to respond. M.
