Hello, I am in Sports science and I am searching for work placement for next year (Jan-September) Would love to hear ideas/suggestions, from people who have done sports related placements! I would be most interested in fitness, s&c and sports injuries. Would also like to hear opinions on international placements in places such as Dubai/France :) Thanks!

Hi there! I'm currently in 6th year and hoping to do a sports science course. Where did you do the course and could you give me an insight into what you did and is it as interesting as you thought it would be? Thanks

    Hi :)
I am currently in 2nd year of Sports Science in UL and I really like it. In 1st year you do general subjects such as physics and maths alongside more sports related modules such as anatomy, physiology and coaching science. I hadn't done any more physics than JC level and I did Ordinary Level maths for my LC so I struggled somewhat with these in the first semester. These are completely generalised modules but a focus is put on sports further on throughout the second semester and in 2nd year. It depends on how good you are with maths but even if you're not, and a bit of time and effort is put into these then you'll manage. The other modules are very interesting, these being anatomy and physiology which take a look at the whole body. The modules change in the second semester and you do sports psychology and biomechanics, which does involve some physics too but is a lot more sports focused.
Coaching science from 1st to 2nd year involves many various elements and this is definitely one of the more wide-ranging sections of the course. We did the following: athletics studies, fitness testing, s&c, rugby/GAA coaching, exercise to music, coaching placements. This module is a very interactive one and I thought I wouldnt like it at the start but I found it very interesting and enjoyable.
Physiology gets tougher in the second semester of 2nd year but you do a lot more labwork and fitness testing so overall, good experience. Right now we have just organised and gone through with the Plassey 10k race for coaching science, done coaching placements in an area of our choice and we are studying psychology of movement, physiology and sports injuries. The sports injuries module is my favourite as it is very interesting and you learn a lot in it and gain skills in taping, rehab etc.
I wasn't a particularly sporty person going into the course but they don't expect you to be very very fit, the exercise elements are fine.
Overall its an extremely interesting course to do, its not a doss course though and you do have to work hard to do well in it. Some people dropped out along the way as they found the science too hard/ had no interest in it. If you don't like science I wouldn't advise it. Its science with sports more than anything, but if you're interested in science then go for it. I have no regrets anyways :) Good luck in the LC and I hope this helps! :D

That sounds like a very decent course.
