Hi an old lady has asked me could I start her opel corsa for her. I need to give you a brief history of it. As I say its 04 with 30,000 miles on it. it was driven by her husband until he died 3 years ago and for two years after that it was started weekly but for last year it wasn't touched. His wife cant drive. I have tried to jump start it with my car and the opel starts and runs just for just about 5 seconds. A friend of mine says it could be battery in key causing imoloiszer to stop car. Could anyone suggest anything or is it serious to call mechanic.

    Thanking You

I think the immobilizer in the key is charged by RF. Would someone have tried changing the battery in the key? The immobilizer is a small rectangular block and could have fell out of the key while the body of it was open. I f the key wasn't touched I'd be looking at something else!

Hi I opened the key today and there is a 3volt battery in it.

That's for the remote locking not the immobilizer.

O rite. But when I press the locking the doors don't lock, but is this because the car is ran down rather than battery been gone.

The battery in the key might be dead so no RCL but the immobilizer is worked off the chip I mentioned and has nothing to do with the battery in the key.

Thanks for that, but the fact that the car runs for a few seconds every time, does that signal the problem is small

That would be a symptom that the chip is missing. http://www.askthemechanic.co.uk/immobilizer/vauxhall-immobilizer.html
Look again if it is there Id imagine your problem is dampness related..as a mechanic about that I'm an Electrical Engineer :pac:

Thanks again for all your help. I think the chip is in it but I will check it again. Hopefully a mechanic might advise on what to do.

Stale petrol. if the car has not had fresh petrol in the last year or so it will have this symptom.

Does it cut out when you take the jump leads off or just run for a second or two and cut out ??

Will it run with a bit of a rev ??

If its first option you need to either charge or replace the battery likely needs a replacement if it hasnt been driven in a long time.

Or the second option is it has likely lost the immobaliser code. Does she have a spare key you could try ??
I cant remember if those corsas have an immobaliser light in them i presume they do (google it) See does the light go out and stay out while cranking.

    Hi all,
1, it cuts out when I still have my jump leads on it.

2, when I start it and rev it up, it still cuts out even on rev.

3, The micro chip for the imoliser is in the key as its the master one I am using.

4, when I start the car the usual lights come on. like the hand break light and the engine management light.

Hi I put 5 litres of fresh petrol into it but didn't take out old stuff. Will it sort itself out if I keep trying to start it or is it a bigger problem to sort stale petrol

It depends on how much was in the tank before.
