Are there any apps were I can use for loyalty cards or payment methods that I could use on the Nexus 5. Ireland specific obviously.

    Highly unlikely.
NFC requires the vendor to have an NFC terminal; as such I think only Insomnia and a few others ( via Zappa) use this service. Everyone else uses the aged swipe and go method.

( also its nfc it's payment, I believe , is tied to google wallet . A service not in use here )

This is a pretty cool application of NFC if you're the geeky sort and want to automate certain tasks.

No Google wallet just makes your phone into a virtual MasterCard which is accepted anywhere that's a MasterCard paypass which means it should work on all Irish terminals. It works in most UK ones anyway. Although there's often auth issues as Google Wallet gives you a US card. But technically possible

    McDonald's use NFC.

There's NFC at the Bus Shelters now. Beside the advertisement, there's a QR code and a place to tap your phone.

In order to scan the QRCode you need to open a scanner app - what app would interact with the NFC device on that bus stop?

If you have nfc on it does it itself.

Finds the muckiest picture on your phone and displays it on the shelter :)

I've ordered an NFC ring (nfcring.com) and I hope to use it to unlock my phone when I take it out of my pocket.

My new laptop also has NFC and it would be awesome if I could lock/unlock windows 8 with the ring alone.

For security reasons Nfc is disabled until the screen is unlocked

I'm sure I can get around that.

It's a minor inconvenience anyway since if I want to key in my current passphrase or pattern, I have to turn the screen on anyway.

Basically give you information on the product(s) advertised.

An app called nfc ring unlock claims to be able to unlock your phone by just holding the ring up to it. Gets mixed reviews though.

Yeah, there are also hacks to disable it with root access. The reason for this security is that nfc is intended for micro transactions, a thief would be able to rob you of up to 15 quid without picking your pocket

If you're rooted there's an exposed module that'll do it for you. I haven't tried it to unlock the phone, only to enable nfc while locked. I can change profiles in certain locations like the car, work etc without have to unlock. This would defeat the purpose imo.
