EDIT - MODS i hope this is in the right place- if not feel free to move ;)
    1. Fastboot
    2. recovery
    3. factory reset
    4. simlock
    5. system info

I would like to keep my existing contacts and SMS at the very least. I have no probs if everything elsis wiped asi backed up pics/vids recently, andshortly after my camera on the phone stopped working.

    Anyone any ideas?

Don't wipe anything, there's no need for that if the phone is just in the recovery menu. Press and hold the power button only until the screen turns off and release, wait 10 seconds and press the power button for 2 seconds as you normally would and the phone will turn off. Make sure your fingers are NOT on any of the volume buttons as this is how it boots into the recovery / fastboot menu.

If you keep getting sent to the "root" menu, you likely have a stuck volume buttons. Check first that it's not stuck pressed down and reboot.
Clean the phone a little to make sure that none of the capacitive buttons are being pushed in advertantly.

Uh, that's not usually a good thing to happen randomly - looks like a corruption of the rom. Keep trying to reboot, if it's stuck on that screen youll have to send her in or install a rom manually.
You didnt hit any of those buttons in the root menu did you? Like, factory reset?

    Extra:
I realise after reading over the thread, that pushing the power button in that menu will actually *click* the option that was highlighted. Try pushing it in and holding it in for 10 seconds. I think the factory reset option at least gives you prompt, so you probably just selected "recovery menu", which on htc just shows that symbol you described.

Good job, luckily you had a removable battery. If you didnt, it's a bit more confusing.

For future reference, you were in the bootloader. There is no "root" menu. You got there by holding volume down while pressing the power button.
To get out of it, go to Fastboot, then select reboot.
