I suggest you pay to play all the courses open to you first, there's a fair few members of the clubs you'll be looking at on this forum who are bound to pop along with an invite...
    IMHO in terms of course/facilities...
    Tullamore
    New Forest
    Mullingar
    Esker Hills
    Glasson
    Longford
    Moate
    Athlone
    Roscommon
    Ballinasloe

    Mullingar.

Great track. Gets a bit wet in winter is only bad thing to say about it but it is the midlands.

No financial troubles either like some other clubs so no worry there. And a lovely club house in my opinion.

Oh! And the Mullingar Scratch Cup towards the end of the summer is great to go watch, the winners list includes McIlroy, Harrington, Clarke and loads more!!!

Commiserations on having to move to Ballymahon, closeness wise Glasson & Longford would be the nearest courses driving wise. Having not played Longford i cant comment on it. Glasson is a great course IMO lovely views and nice course. After that Moate would be next nearest, a hidden gem of a course i think, can get wet in winter is only thing. After that the other courses listed above are a good spin from Ballymahon.

I was a member of Tullamore for about 17 years up to last year, great club, very friendly members, and a great atmosphere. Course is always in very good nick, the greens during the summer are the best I have ever played on. Definitely try and get to play a few of the courses slave mentioned if you can. Any questions about Tullamore and I'll try to help you.

Lots of Ballymahon members already playing in Moate and it's quite handy to get to. Nice friendly club and reasonably priced membership. Course in very good condition considering how wet it's been.

No problem organising a free round for you in Moate if you PM me I'll give you some details if you want to try us out.

If you want a course nearby, Glasson is only 10 minutes from you and a great course. Not a lot of members but easy to get out to play in the evenings. Mount temple is also close but not as good. If you want to play team golf, moate would be a good option as they seem to be very strong. Bit further away though.

Longford is an option but I'd prefer Glasson or moate.

I think the other courses mentioned are too far away.

Why did you leave Tullamore? Great course

I've actually moved to the UK, will hopefully be a member some time in the future again.

I think Tullamore have got rid of their joining fee too - almost took the plunge and joined there this year. Its a bit of a trek from Ballymahon though.

I'd play a few of them and then make up your mind. Is price an issue? Is so remember Glasson is twice the price what all the rest of them are. Ask for Gareth is you are ringing them.

I'm a member in Athlone, but I think you should be looking at one of Longford, Glasson, Moate or Mount Temple.

Mullingar, Athlone and Tullamore are all on the far side of their respective towns from where you would be driving

The rest of what Slave posted would all be a bit of trek if you're asking me.

Glasson is probably the more aesthetically pleasing of the 4 clubs I listed as nearest to you, but if you want a golf course that is open 365 days of the year, then Mount Temple is your club.

Either way, no matter which club you go to, the members are all very nice as I have played all 4 courses numerous times and you'll be grand no matter where you go :)

Tulllamore have dropped the joining fee since Jan 2012. Fantastic course but distance may not suit you.
Open Mondays start this coming Monday so why don't you give it a try?. New caterers start very soon too.
