Steel vs Graphite shafts for irons

With so many reviews throwing up pros and cons for both type of shaft I was wondering what people here thought.

I started playing last summer and want to upgrade the irons I bought last year. There does seem to be a general consensus that steel is better but is that actually the case?
I have a very relaxed swing and some reviews day that kind of swing can benefit from graphite shafts as they allow for greater club head speed.

    Any thoughts are welcome

Go get fitted, only way you'll know for sure.

    As cheaper alternatives:

Ask your Pro for advice or get the lend of a few clubs from mates and see how they feel at the range.

It's impossible to tell, Ernie has a nice relaxed swing, he I'm pretty sure he doesn't use graphite shafts ;)

Fitting the best bet, but there are other cheaper ways to give you a feel.

Els started using graphite shafts in his irons last year:D
But I think he's back to steel this year

:D I posted that and didn't bother checking.... But the doubt crept in after I posted...
Apparently Kuchar and Day use graphite too!

Seen the pros seem to be making a change to graphite, I'd say the next big thing will be graphite shafts in every set of irons off the rack.
When was the last time you seen a steel shafted driver or even wood.

I started playing with graphite shafts then changed to stiff shaft steel.
    Played the same with both.
    Use reg shaft steel now

Have never played graphite irons. Think they used to get some bad press due to inconsistancy, I remember a guy I knew playing off 3 trying a set and they were driving him mad, especially the short irons. But that was about 15 years ago, I've read they've improved a lot since. Would be interesting to try a set.

So I went with the graphites in the end.

Played my first round with them today and I was hitting the ball about half a club longer than with my previous irons.

Only one round and no range time with them but first impressions are positive for me

What clubs where you using before compared to now?

It could be more of a difference in loft and length rather than shaft. Great your happy with them though, that much more confidence will help if nothing else.
