GAA RTE International

With SKY now buying GAA matches for pay per view is it not time to bring
back the idea of having an RTE international channel.
Such a channel could promote all things Irish , the Arts , Tourism , Irish News
,Irish Documentaries and of course Sport.

IM open to correction but wasn't the last time RTE International was muted it
was said the cost would be a million to 2 million a year. surely this isn't that much money and if it was to be popular it could sell some advertising time.

If GAA games are looking to be promoted would it not be smarter to do that
    through a FREE platform.

Pat Rabbite should now push for RTE international which would put pay to the idea that the GAA need SKY to promote the game abroad.

Rte have already announced they will be streaming Gaa online to abroad. It will be a subscription service. This cannot be delivered by satellite as it would limit it to a very small geographical area, the UK is already covered through premier sports

RTÉ Ireland, announced as part of their 5 year strategy (2012/17) about 6 months ago - http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2057041153

you'd wonder though if the GAA and general international service would be separate.

It wouldn't have the rights to GAA in GB, maybe The Sunday Game.

    .

    Where has this been reported?

From what I've read the matches will be on their standard subscription channels

Lots of people saying it's PPV  Completely wrong of course and very annoying to hear it.

For anybody saying GAA is going PPV, PPV on Sky is Sky Box Office. The games are not going to be on Sky Box Office.

Yes, they have not gone Per Per View, they have just gone Pay To View.

I think most people who will be affected will understand the basic concept that it will cost money to view the games on Sky.

Pay-per-view: everybody would have to pay to view the games - no matter what subscription service they currently have - and would just get a single event for their once-off payment.

Subscription: subscribers get the games in addition to all the other events on offer. There will be no extra cost (which using the term PPV implies) for those who already subscribe.

Basically, both models may involve a payment but the concept is really quite different.

RTÉ International could provide coverage of GAA on Cable and Satellite providers, but it would have to be part of their basic package, and they would have to have interested cable and satellite providers to take up the channel.
Pat Rabbite should now push for RTE international which would put pay to the idea that the GAA need SKY to promote the game abroad.

It has taken the minister a year to decide on RTÉjr's move from RTÉ TWO his department is not push anything on anyone.

In the press release for the review of designated games the department said that the minister was advised by the GAA that
He also noted that based on GAA assurances, he believes that the events which were considered for designation will continue to be shown on a free to air basis.

Isn't RTÉ Ireland essentially Radio and Television of Ireland Ireland?

That's almost as stupid as PIN number or ATM machine!

Didn't realise that RTE Ireland is actually going to happen, i wonder if it will happen by the time the SKY deal is up in 3 years.
Do you think the other matches that aren't on SKY should be shown on the new RTE Ireland channel or when the 3 year contract is up should all the matches including hurling be shown on RTE Ireland after all according to the
    GAA this not about money.

If the game is to be promoted to a wide audience and not just expats then surely free on satellite is the way to go. I dont think non expats will be running to their laptops to tune into the big game , were as they might come across it on satellite. It makes sense to have it online aswell but if its not about the money then maybe it would be good to promote GAA games
on RTE Ireland. If it went well they could broadcast on Hotbird 13 and reach a wider audience

GAA will never be on FTA satellite or RTÉ Ireland unless RTÉ are willing to for these rights. GAA TV rights are about money no matter what they say.

While I have no problem with a discussion of RTÉ International (although I doubt it will ever happen), there are now multiple GAA TV rights threads around Boards. There's one in the broadcasting forum here

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2057180971&page=2

and I think that's the only one we need in Cable & Digital.
